SMU's Davis Named Men's Basketball Player of the Week 1/24/00

DENVER, COLO. - SMU forward Willie Davis has been named the Western Athletic Conference men's basketball player of the week.
Davis, a junior from Dallas, Texas (LIncoln HS), averaged 24.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in a pair victories for the Mustangs last week. In a 104-87 win against UTEP, he scored 23 points, was 11-of-15 from the free throw line, had four steals and dished out three assists. Two nights later versus Fresno State, Davis recorded his conference-leading ninth double-double of the season with 26 points and 15 rebounds. SMU won the game, 85-78. In the two games combined, he was 16-of-36 (.444) from the field and 16-of-22 (.727) from the line with 49 points, 18 rebounds, four assists, four steals and two blocked shots. SMU improved to 16-3 overall (4-1 in the WAC) with the victories.

Other nominations included: senior guard Courtney Alexander, Fresno State; senior guard Johnny White, Hawai`i; senior forward Marquise Gainous, TCU; and senior center Brandon Kurtz, Tulsa.
