DENVER -- In semifinal action of the Western Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament on November 3, top-seeded SMU title hopes were dashed by San Jose State, while Tulsa downed Fresno State to advance to the finals.
San Jose State, who lost to SMU 0-4 in October, scored three goals in the second half to end the game with a 4-2 advantage. SMU struck first, with a goal by Freshman of the Year Kim Harvey. Spartan Julie Brum answered minutes later. Harvey netted SMU's second goal to give the Mustangs the halftime lead. The second half belonged to the Spartans, as Karli Silveira, Brum and Brandy Apodaca beat back-up keeper Rachael Slocum.
The regular-season champion SMU's chances for an invitation to the NCAA tournament are still alive with a record of 13-5-1 (6-0-1WAC).
In the later game, second-seed Tulsa continued its winning ways, going two overtimes with Fresno State before netting the game winner. Despite being out shot 19-10, the Hurricane Julie Davidson put her team up by one early in the second half. Fresno State's Amber Houchen tied the game in the 54th minute with an assist from Reyna Green. Marcie Ferguson netted the game winner in the 110th minute to secure Tulsa's first trip to a championship match.
The Bulldogs finished the fall campaign with an 11-9 (3-4WAC) mark.
The championship match between Tulsa and San Jose State will kick-off at 10 a.m. on November 5 at Bulldog Stadium in Fresno, Calif.
