DENVER -- San Jose State, the 2000 Western Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament champion, will play No. 15-ranked Stanford at 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, November 8 on the Stanford campus in the first round of the NCAA womens soccer tournament.
The NCAA Division 1 Women's Soccer Committee announced the 48-team field on Sunday, November 5. San Jose State is one of 13 teams making their first appearance in the national tournament. Stanford will be making its 10th appearance in 11 seasons.
After winning three straight games in the conference tournament, San Jose State enters the first round of NCAA action with a 10-12-1 overall record, while Stanford, making its third straight appearance, is 13-5-1.
The Cardinal are 1-0 against the Spartans this season, and 2-0 lifetime. At the adidas Bay Area Classic on September 24, the Cardinal triumphed, 3-0. The other meeting was in 1998, when the Cardinal won 2-0.
The Spartans earned an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament by downing Tulsa, 3-1, on Sunday, November 5 in the conference finals in Fresno, Calif. They upset No. 18-ranked SMU, 4-2, on Thursday, November 3.
The winner of Wednesday's game will travel to Provo, Utah for a second-round match against No.10-ranked Brigham Young.
The Pac-10 led all conferences with seven representatives, while the Atlantic Coast Conference was second with six. The top 16 teams in the tournament receive first-round byes. Top-ranked Notre Dame earned the No. 1 seed of the tournament followed by Pac-10 champion Washington. Clemson, the regular-season ACC champion, is No. 3, with Nebraska (No. 4) and North Carolina (No. 5) rounding out the top five. UCLA is the No. 6 seed, Penn State the seventh and California the eighth.
San Jose State will host the NCAA Women's Soccer Final Four on December 1 and 3 at Spartan Stadium in San Jose, Calif.
