DENVER, COLO. UTEP forward Roy Smallwood has been named the Western Athletic Conference men's basketball player of the week.
Smallwood, a freshman from Houston, Texas (Milby HS), scored a career-high 25 points in UTEP's 92-78 victory over Fresno State on Saturday. Smallwood made 11 of his 17 shots from the field (7-of-9 in the second half) and all three of his three-point attempts. He also had five rebounds, two assists, two blocks and a steal. The win kept Fresno State from moving into a first place tie with Tulsa in the WAC.
Other nominations included: senior guard Courtney Alexander, Fresno State; senior forward/center Marquette Alexander, Hawai`i; junior guard Jeryl Sasser, SMU; and senior forward Marquise Gainous, TCU.
