Athlete of the Week
Nevada freshman Alyssa Chin was named the Western Athletic Conference athlete of the week for Oct. 15-21.
Chin, a native of La Canada, Calif., led the Wolf Pack to victory over UC Davis on Oct. 18 with wins in the 200 and 500 freestyle. She also swam on the first-place 200 medley relay team. Her time of 1:55.46 in the 200 is tops in the WAC so far this season.
Then at the Pacific Invitational, Oct. 19 and 20, Chin finished second in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:08.84 and second in the 200 backstroke in 2:07.71. The Wolf Pack finished second in the four-team meet, with 714.50 points.

Others Nominated...
Two weeks ago, Fresno State senior Jesie Lewis posted two third-place finishes at the Colorado State Early Bird Invitational to help the Bulldogs place third in the eight-team meet. Lewis also swam on all four relay teams which finished with three thirds and one second...Last week, Rice junior Mandy Mularz won the 100-yard freestyle against Georgia Tech with a time of 51.45. She also swam the leadoff leg of the victorious 200 medley relay as the Owls went on to win the meet, 120-104. Then in a tri meet against Clemson and Virginia, Mularz won the 50 free in 23.33 and the 100 free in 50.90. In addition, her split from the second-place 400 free relay was 50.80, a personal best and Rice record. Mularz was not chosen as the Athlete of the Week because Rice was the only team to compete last weekend.

Still a W
Though it wont show up on the official schedule, Fresno State posted an exhibition win over Cal State Bakersfield on October13. The Bulldogs rebounded from home losses to nationally-ranked Pacific and California, coming away with 12 victories in the 15-event meet. Fresno State went one-two in eight events and swept five events. The Bulldogs went on to finish third at the Colorado State Early Bird Invitational the following weekend and will compete again on November 2, traveling to San Diego for matchups against Air Force and New Mexico.

Win, Lose AND Draw
Rice competed against three teams from the ACC last weekend, finishing with one win, one loss and one tie. The Owls first met Georgia Tech on October 26 in Atlanta. Rice won by a score of 120-104. Then on October 27, Rice took on Clemson and Virginia at Clemson. The Owls tied with Clemson, 120-120, but lost to the Cavaliers, 128.50-75.70.

Top Times
Rice swimmers hold the top times in the conference in almost every event in which the Owls have competed this fall. Mandy Mularz has posted the top 50 and 100-freestyle times, Rachel Armstrong is tops in the 200-free, Elaine Lee holds the best 200-butterfly time, Corrie Kristick leads the pack in the 500 and 1000-free, while Lauren Hills times in the 200-breaststroke and 200 and 400-I.M. lead the WAC. In the 200-backstroke, Nevadas Alyssa Chin holds the best time. Rice did not compete in the 1650-free nor the 100-yard stroke events. Nevada leads in those categories, with Leticia Cunha tops in the 1650-free and Alyssa Chin leading in the 100-back. Kathy Echiverri and Michaeala Keller have posted top times in the 100-breast and 100-fly, respectively.
