The SMU women's soccer team clinched the 2001 Western Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament title Saturday night with a 2-0 win over Hawaii at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU. For SMU, the win (its 10th straight) give the Lady Mustangs an automatic berth to the 2001 NCAA Tournament. SMU goes into the tournament with a 15-3 record. Hawaii closes out its season with a 10-10 mark.
SMU took control of the game right from the opening whistle, putting Hawaii on the defense every possible chance, as evident in the number of shots the Lady Mustangs took (23 shots for SMU compared to four for Hawaii). SMU got on the scoreboard at the 17:29 mark - thanks to an own goal by Hawaii. Carmel Hurley attempted to clear a shot towards the net, only to misjudge the ball and watch it cross over the goal line and into the net. Senior forward Sarah Harvey gave SMU an insurance goal at 57:08 with a header off a free kick from junior defender Diana Kelm.
The 2001 WAC All-Tournament team is as follows:
SMU: Tara Comfort, Diana Kelm, Erin McLeod, Jill Heinemann
