The SMU women's soccer team will face 11th-ranked Texas in the first round of the 2001 NCAA Tournament, in an announcement made by the NCAA on Monday. The Lady Mustangs (15-3), as the 2001 WAC champion, received an automatic bid to the tournament with a 2-0 win over Hawaii on Saturday night. Texas (14-5) lost to fifth-ranked Texas A&M Sunday in the Big 12 championship game.
The game between SMU and Texas is scheduled for Friday, November 16 at 5:00 p.m. in College Station, Texas. Texas A&M will face Southwest Texas State in the other first round game in College Station beginning at 7:30 p.m. Friday's winners will face each other Sunday in College Station at 1:30 p.m.
SMU holds a 5-0-1 series edge over the Longhorns. The Lady Mustangs were to face Texas in Spring, Texas, on Sept. 14, but the game was canceled due to the terrorist attacks.
SMU makes its seventh NCAA postseason appearance, with the most recent taking place in 1999 as the Lady Mustangs lost to Penn State in quarterfinal action, 5-0. The Lady Mustangs hold a 5-6 all-time NCAA Tournament record.
