Tulsa Advances With Win Over Boise State
San Jose, Calif. The first match of the 2001 Western Atheltic Conference Volleyball Tournament went the distance with eighth-seeded Tulsa defeating ninth-seeded Boise State, 3-2. The game scores were 30-21, 27-30, 23-30, 30-25,15-10. It was the sixth five-game match in tournament history.

With the win Tulsa (9-14) advances to play top-seeded Hawai`i Friday, Nov. 16 at 1:00 p.m. (PT). Boise State falls to 1-23 with the loss.

The match was the first WAC tournament match for both Tulsa and Boise State and the first WAC tournament match since 1998. After capturing game one 30-21, the Golden Hurricane dropped the next two to the Broncos. The Golden Hurricane took control in the fifth game.

Tulsa was led by freshman middle blocker Dana Weddle, who recorded her fourth double-double of the season. Weddle had 19 kills and 17 digs for the Hurricane. Fellow freshman Kristin Bailey added a match-high 22 kills for Tulsa. Due to injuries, the Hurricane only played seven players.

Boise State received strong performances from freshman outside hitter Nicole Christensen and sophomore outside hitter Megan Tranter who both had double-doubles. Tranter recorded her team-leading fifth double-double on 16 kills and 16 digs. Chrsitensen added her first collegiate double-double with 15 kills and 11 digs. Five different Broncos were in double-digits in kills.

UTEP Advances to Quarterfinals of WAC Volleyball Tournament

San JoseSeventh-seeded UTEP swept Louisiana Tech, 30-27, 30-18, 30-11 in the second match of the evening.

UTEPs Ana Beatriz Fontes led all hitters in the second match with 13 kills and a .500 hitting percentage. Jennifer Abbruzzese added 10 kills and 10 digs. Brianna Sibley had 11 kills for Louisiana Tech.

The Miners set a WAC Tournament hitting percentage record, hitting .402.

Four quarterfinal matches will be played on Friday, November 16. Top-seeded Hawaii will face #8 Tulsa at 1 p.m., followed by #4 seed Rice and #5 seed Fresno State at 3 p.m. Third-seeded San Jose State will play #6 seed at 6:30 p.m., while #2 seed Nevada and UTEP finished the day at 8:30 p.m.
