Others Nominated For Player of the Week
Nevada freshman Alyssa Chin won three events last week in a tri-meet with UNLV and UC Irvine. She won the 100 backstroke with a time of 57.40, the 200 backstroke with a time of 2:03.44 and the 200 I.M. in 2:07.08. All three times were season bests as the Wolf Pack went on to defeat the Rebels, 174-125, and UC Irvine, 198-101.
SMU Versus Texas A&M
Behind a record-setting performance by freshman Flavia Rigamonti the No. 9 SMU womens swimming & diving team defeated Texas A&M, 143.5-99.5 Friday afternoon at Perkins Natatorium. Swimming in just her second event of her college career, Rigamonit shattered the old pool record at Perkins in the 1000 free, setting a new all-time best time of 9:40.84. Rigamontis time was 4.08 seconds better than the previous mark. Following Rigamontis feat, SMUs sophomore trio of Dallas Marshall, Georgina Lee, and Alenka Kejzar won the next three events. Marshall finished first in the 200 free to start the string. The 2001 WAC Freshman of the Year, Lee, won next, capturing the 50 free with a time of 24.34, while Kejzar posted a time of 2:03.39 in the 200 I.M. for first place. The trio continued its run two events later, beginning with Lees win in the 200 butterfly with a time of 1:58.71. Marshall became the second Mustang to capture two events in one night, winning the 100 free with a time of 51.97, followed by Kejzar who won her second event as well, the 200 back, with a time of 2:01.50. Rigamonti then added to her record-setting night by winning the 500 free with a time of 4:52.82. Laura Bares broke into the winning circle as well, winning the 200 breast with a time of 2:18.81. SMU also finished first in two relays.
Nevada Versus UNLV, UC Irvine
The Wolf Pack improved to 4-1 in dual meet action after defeating UNLV 174-125 and UC Irvine 198-101 last weekend in Las Vegas. Freshman Alyssa Chin won three events and diver Kate Oiness took first place in the 1-meter and 3-meter events to lead Nevada to victory. The Pack also got first-place finishes from senior Kathy Echiverri in the 100 breast (1:03.48) aand junior Ashley Selleh-Clendenin in the 50 free (23.45). Senior Alzina Lim won the 100 fly in 58.29 and the team posted victories in the 200 medley and 400 free relays as well.
The Polls Are Out
The first poll was released on Nov. 1 and updated on Nov. 15. SMU jumped to ninth from 11th with a dual meet win over Texas A&M. The Mustangs also finished second at the SMU Classic since the last poll was releases. Rice dropped from the 22nd spot to the 23rd spot after an idle weekend. Both teams were ranked in the final poll last season, along with Hawai`i.
Top Times
Aside from Rigamontis record-setting performance in the 1000 free, several other notable times were posted. Lees time of 1:58.71 in the 200 fly met the NCAA automatic qualifying standard. Echiverris time of 1:03.46 in the 100 breast marked a provisional qualifying time, as did teammate Selleh-Clendenins time of 23.45 in the 50 free. Hawai`is Morgan Hoesterey was just added to the top times list with her performance in the 100 breast on Oct. 20. Her time of 1:03.20 was good enough to meet the provisional qualifying standard.
