November 7, 2001 Contact: Claire Schmitt (214)768-1054

DALLAS (SMU) -- Fourth-seeded Hawaii defeated #3 seed Boise State by the score of 7-1 while sixth-seed Fresno State beat fifth-seed Tulsa, 3-2, on Wednesday after the first day of action of the 2001 Western Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Championships held at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU. Hawaii improves to 9-9 on the season while Boise State closes out its first season with the WAC with a 10-7-1 record. Fresno State improves to 8-9 while Tulsa finishes the 2001 campaign with a 9-9-2 overall record.

In game one, senior forward Veronica Flores was the star of the game for the Rainbow Wahine, scoring Hawaii's first-ever hat trick (three goals) at the 5:47 mark, 25:41 mark and 40:16 mark. Hawaii outshot the Broncos, 12-8. Boise State's Dayle McNabb collected their lone goal at the 17:20 mark. Hawaii's seven goals tied a WAC tournament record for the most goals scored by a team in a single game, previously set by BYU in 1995 with a 7-0 win over Wyoming. Wednesday's contest did set a new WAC Tournament record for the most total goals in a single game (eight).

Hawaii advances to Thursday's semifinals with a contest against second-seeded Rice(7-8) beginning at 5:00 p.m. at Westcott Field.

In game two, Fresno State got on the scoreboard first with a header off a corner kick by Aimee Thompson at the 10:44 mark. The Bulldogs' Angela Taylor increased Fresno's lead to 2-0 with a deflection goal at 17:55. In the second half, Tulsa scored two quick goals in a span of four minutes to knot the game at 2-2 late in the second half. The Golden Hurricane goals were both scored by Holly Lorman. But Fresno State countered at 82:49 with a goal by Erin Savegusa, giving the Bulldogs the lead and the eventual win.

Fresno State advances to Thursday's semifinals with a game against host school and top-seed SMU (13-3) at Westcott Field beginning at approximately 7:30 p.m.
