Tulsas Aleksandra Durska has been named the Western Athletic Conference Womens Tennis Player of the Month for October.
Durska, a junior from Pobiedziska, Poland, completed the month with a six-match winning streak to finish 8-3 in October. At the Riviera Womens All-American Tennis Championships in Pacific Palisades, Calif., Durska defeated 66th-ranked Selia Mathew of Alabama, 7-6, 6-1 in first-round action. She then upset 25th-ranked Katja Kovac of Baylor, 6-1, 6-3 in the second round before falling to Stanfords 73rd-ranked Lauren Barnikow, 6-3, 7-6. Durska suffered two more losses in the tournament before rebounding to win her next six matches.
By downing six opponents, including two ranked players, Durska claimed the singles title at the Omni Hotel Central Region Tennis Championships in Tulsa, Okla. In the championship match, Durska defeated Boise States Helen Lawson. Durska won the first set, 6-2, and was leading in the second set, 2-1, before Lawson retired due to injury.
Durska is ranked 82nd among the countrys top singles players and ranks third among Tulsas all-time winningest singles players with 69 career victories. Her cumulative record for the fall season is 12-3.
Also nominated were: Boise State sophomore Helen Lawson, Fresno State senior Kim Niggemeyer, Nevada sophomore Vania Apodaca, and Rice junior Jeri Gonzales.
