The top-seeded SMU Lady Mustangs will face fourth-seed Hawaii Saturday night for the 2001 WAC Women's Soccer Championship title after SMU soundly beat #6 Fresno State, 4-0, for its ninth straight win and Hawaii defeated second-seed Rice, 2-0, during Thursday's semifinal games of this year's tournament held at Westcott Field on the campus of SMU. With their respective wins, SMU improves to 14-3 and Hawaii to 10-9 on the season. Fresno State closes out the 2001 campaign with a 8-10 record while Rice, in its first season of Division I women's soccer, finishes with a mark of 7-9.
In game one, Hawaii offensively dominated the Owls, taking 20 shots compared to Rice's seven. Hawaii's
Liz Lusk connected twice for the Rainbow Wahine - both goals on headers off corner kicks at the 25:06 mark and the 57:20 mark.
In the second game, SMU got off to the quickest start in recent memory as sophomore midfielder
Kim Harvey headed in a goal off a very short centering pass from WAC Freshman of the Year
Jill Heinemann only 25 seconds into the game. SMU added its second goal at 38:52 as Heinemann served a ball towards the net - only to have Fresno State goalkeeper
Mary-tyler Wahl let the ball slip through her hands as she was attempting to catch the ball above her head. Senior forward
Sarah Harvey gave SMU a 3-0 lead at the 73:53 mark after firing a loose ball into the net. Freshman
Amanda Jordan closed out the SMU scoring after receiving a long leading pass from
Jennifer Prigmore and put the ball into the goal at 82:43.
The WAC championship game between SMU and Hawaii will be held at Westcott Field on Saturday, Nov. 10, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The winner will receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament.
