Savane Classic
Three WAC mens golfers participated in the Savane All-American Golf Classic Nov. 18-20 at the El Paso Country Club in El Paso, Texas. Fresno State junior Nick Watney finished in a tie for second, just one stroke behind the winner. Watney shot rounds of 68-65-70 for a score of 203. SMU senior Franklin Hatchett placed fourth, shooting 68-70-70--208, while Tulsa sophomore David Inglis finished 21st with a score of 216 (73-71-72). Twenty-four of the top collegiate golfers were invited to participate in the prestigious tournament, the 27th annual this fall.

San Jose State garnered a win at the Santa Clara Invitational while three WAC individuals won titles in November. The Spartans rallied behind sophomore Isaac Weintraubs first-place effort and bested the field of 12 in San Jose on Nov. 5, 17 strokes ahead of the second-place team. Weintraub shot 74-72-67 for a three-under-par 213. The 67 was the low round of the tournament. Fresno States Watney won the Aztec Invitational in San Diego on Nov. 5, shooting 69-67-70--206 (-10). Hawai`i sophomore Matt Kodama won his first collegiate tournament at the UH/Turtle Bay Invitational with rounds of 70-75-72--217.

Schools Report Signees
Last month La. Tech and SMU announced additions to their squads for 2002-03. Louisiana Tech signed Logan Riester of Pittsburgh, Penn. and North Allegheny High School. The American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) ranks Riester in the top 100. The SMU mens team signed Jerad Harklau of Rockwall, Texas, Will Dodson of Tulsa, Okla. and Leo Corrigan of Highland Park, Texas. All three players have posted recent top 10 finishes in AJGA tournaments. On the womens side, Allen, Texas product Jennifer Ackerson penned a letter of intent to play for the Mustangs. Ackerson has won numerous NTPGA events and high school tournaments and also competed in the Australian Womens Open.
