DENVER -- SMU's Kit Carson has been named the Western Athletic Conference women's tennis Player of the Week for matches played during Feb. 12-18.

Carson, a sophomore from Tomball, Texas, has jumped on the scene going 3-0, including a 2-0 stretch last week against Texas-Arlington and conference opponent UTEP. A transfer from Texas A&M, Carson, who grew up taking lessons from Mustang head coach Beverly Bowes, has had an immediate impact on the team.

On the week, Carsons play helped push No. 51 SMU past UT-Arlington and UTEP both by a 6-1 score. Against UTA on Feb. 15, Carson was triumphant in straight sets. In SMU's first WAC match of the season, Carson handled UTEP's Kendall Exelby. After winning the first set, she dropped the second but rallied back to secure the win. Playing for the first time in tandem with Dee Dee Herring, Carson added two doubles wins during the successful home stand. The duo dominated UTA and UTEP's team of Exelby and Elizabeth Stone.

Rice junior Judith Hegedorn and UTEP senior Jana Perkova were also nominated.
