DENVER Tulsas Sean Monk has been named the Western Athletic Conference mens tennis Player of the Week for matches played April 2-8.
Monk, a junior from Las Vegas, Nev., led the Hurricane to a perfect 2-0 record last week with home wins over Oral Roberts and Boise State. For the week, Monk knotted two singles wins to aid Tulsas cause.
Against cross-town rival Oral Roberts, Monk dispatched his opponent in straight sets at the No. 5 position. A day later against future WAC member Boise State, Monk picked up his seventh straight singles victory with a straight set decision.
With the back-to-back wins, Monk has currently won 14 of his last 15 contests. He needs six wins to break into the schools top-10 all-time career singles victories. His 23 wins to date are a single-season career bet and the most by a TU player this season. In less than three seasons of play, he boasts a career singles mark of 46-30 and needs three more singles victories this season to move into a four-way tie for eighth-place among the schools single-season leaders.
Monk was named the WAC Player of the Week for contests played March 19-25.
