DENVER UTEPs Kendall Exelby has been named the Western Athletic Conference womens tennis Player of the Week for matches played April 2-8.
Exelby, a freshman from Lynton, South Australia, made the move from No. 5 singles to No. 4 singles last week with much success. Exelby made quick work of her opponents in conference matches against Hawai`i and Nevada. In those matches, she tallied two victories in both singles and doubles.
Against Hawai`i, Exelby put a halt to Silva Ricote's seven-match win streak with a straight set decision. On April 7, Exelby downed Nevadas Ana Bihler, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. In tandem with Elizabeth Stone at No. 2 doubles, the duo topped Hawai`is Lynn Novack and Suzie Saunders before defeating Nevadas Kodee Domingo and Vania Apodaca.
The pair of singles wins brought Exelby to .500 on the season, with a 14-14 record. To date she owns a 16-11 mark in doubles action.
Other athletes nominated include: Karolina Roubickova, TCU; and Jennifer DeSpain, Tulsa.
