DENVER Fresno States Liesl Fichtbauer has been named the Western Athletic Conference womens tennis Player of the Week for matches played April 9-15.
Fichtbauer, a senior from Hamburg, Germany, won all three road matches played last week at the top-two singles spots. Currently in the midst of a 14-match win streak, Fichtbauer made quick work of her Mountain West Conference opponents. In eighth-ranked Fresno States 4-3 triumph over No. 62 UNLV, Fichtbauer retired Angleska Abram in straight sets. Two days later, in the Bulldogs 5-2 downing of Utah, the team leader dominated Irinii Kotoglou in a 6-3, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles. Closing out the road trip at No. 36 BYU, Fichtbauer completed the sweep by topping Lu Oswald, 7-6, 6-3, on April 14.
In tandem with Courtney Jantz, Fichtbauer earned two victories at No. 2 doubles. The Bulldog duo overpowered both Utahs and BYUs doubles teams to improve their overall and dual record to 12-6 this year.
Also the WAC Player of the Week for matches played March 5-11, Fichtbauer is in position to complete the best season of her four-year Bulldog career. With two matches remaining before the conference championship, the 44th-ranked player in the nation has an overall record of 27-5 and has won 16 of 19 dual matches this spring.
