FRESNO, Calif. -- No. 26 Fresno State men's tennis dropped a 4-2 decision to No. 4 TCU in the 2001 WAC Championship Tournament final on April 29 at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The Horned Frogs, the tournament's No. 1 seed, received the WAC's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament for the second-straight year.
Fresno State (17-8), the tournament's No. 3 seed, received victories at the Nos. 1 and 2 doubles spots to capture the doubles point and take a 1-0 lead. Peter Luczak and David Mullins, ranked No. 13 nationally, posted an 8-4 win at No. 1 doubles, while Sean Cooper and Nick Fustar, ranked No. 36 nationally, prevailed with an 8-6 triumph at No. 2.
TCU's Toni Gordon, ranked 91st, breezed past Sean Cooper 6-1, 6-2 at the No. 4 spot to even the match at 1-1. The Horned Frogs (20-3) then went up 3-1, picking up straight set wins at Nos. 2 and 5. Luczak, ranked 13th nationally, followed with a convincing 6-2, 6-4 win over eighth-ranked Esteban Carrill of TCU, to improve his overall record to 25-0 and cut TCU's lead to 3-2. Jimmy Haney proceeded to clinch the match for the Horned Frogs with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 win at No. 6 against freshman Alex Krohn.
