NCAA Championship Information


The NCAA Regional selections will take place on Tuesday, May 8. A total of 421 participants will be selected for regional competition, with 30 teams and 156 players advancing to the championship finals. Regional play will be played May 17-19. The East Regional will be hosted by Virginia Commonwealth at the Golden Horseshoe Golf Club in Williamsburg, Va. Oklahoma State, the defending national champion, will host the Central Regional at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla. The West Regional will be played at the same course as the womens regional, the Trysting Tree Golf Course in Corvallis, Ore., home of Oregon State. Duke will host the finals May 30-June 2 at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, North Carolina.

WAC Tidbits


Tulsa, runners-up to TCU at the 2001 WAC Championship, boasts the top-rated Freshman Class according to Golfstats Impact Rankings released on May 2. The Hurricanes 73.40 frosh stroke average headlines the list of 25 teams. Rice is listed eighth with an average of 76.35, while San Jose State sits in 17th with a 75.88 average. Nick Watney, the WAC Player of the Year, is listed in three categories in Golfstats statistics section. Fresno States sophomore standout holds the 10th spot is Par 5 Scoring (4.64) and leads all collegians in Putts on Greens with 1.774. His Short Game is the ninth-best in the nation through May 3 with a .657 average. SMUs Franklin Hatchett ranks fifth in Subpar Strokes Per Round (4.26) and is sixth behind Watney in the Putts on Green category (1.790). As a team, the Mustangs are 10th with 1.861 Putts on Green.

All nine WAC golf programs are ranked in the top 100 in the May 7 Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings. WAC Champion TCU enters the NCAA selections at No. 13, while runner-up Tulsa is listed 39th. SMU is 44th, followed by Fresno State at 54th and Nevada at 56th. Hawai`i, who finished tied with Fresno State for sixth at the Championships is 65th while UTEP, who under the guidance of Co-Coach of the Year Rick Todd placed fourth, sits at No. 70. San Jose State and Rice round out the top 100 at No. 88 and No. 100, respectively.

Master Card District Rankings

In the May 3 edition of the MasterCard Collegiate Golf District Rankings, seven of the nine WAC programs were tabbed in their respective districts. Tulsa garnered the fifth spot in District V behind Oklahoma State, Oklahoma, Kansas and Colorado, respectively. TCU is listed second ahead of SMU, ranked fourth, in District VI. Fresno State at No. 5 leads the list of Nevada (sixth), Hawai`i (seventh) and UTEP (eighth) of WAC teams in District VII. Individually, David Inglis of Tulsa is the No. 2 player in District V, while teammate Logan Goettech is seventh. Franklin Hatchett of SMU is listed fifth in District VI ahead of TCUs Adam Rubinson, who is sixth.
