Denver -- Fresno State's Peter Luczak, the Bulldogs' top singles player, was named the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Player of the Month for April it was announced on May 8.

Luczak, a senior from Melbourne, Australia, went 6-0 last month to improve to 25-0 this season and jump to No. 3 in the WingspanBank.com national singles rankings. He closed out last month by beating SMU's Genius Chidzikwe, the nation's No. 6 player and TCU's Esteban Carril, who is ranked 10th, at the WAC Championships where he helped Fresno State advance to the finals. He is currently the only undefeated player in the national top 100.

The triumph over Chidwikwe, who was named the ITA's Player of the Month in October, gave Luczak his 106th career singles victory, moving him past Bryan Juinio on Fresno State's all-time singles win list.

While the Bulldogs will look to advance to the finals as a team in the 2001 NCAA Men's Tennis Championships, individually Luczak was selected to play in both the singles and doubles matches. In tandem with David Mullins, the pair are currently ranked fifth in the nation.

The accolade for Luczak marks the third time this season that players from WAC schools have been recognized as Players of the Month. Chidzikwe and Mustang teammates and double partners Johan Brunstrom and Jon Wallmark were chosen in October and February, respectively. The duo captured the doubles title in February at the Rolex Indoors, the third leg of the ITA Grand Slam, while Chidzwike won the ITA All-American Championships singles title on Oct. 15, becoming only the second SMU player to win an ITA Grand Slam title since 1986.

First and second round action of the NCAAs is set for May 11-13.
