Weekly Women's Soccer Notes (Sept. 10)

Player of the Week
Hawai`i forward Arlene Devitt helped lead her squad to road wins against Idaho and Gonzaga last week. The 5-foot-9 sophomore from Kapaa, Kauai, contributed an assist in her teams 2-1 overtime victory against Idaho and netted a game-winning goal against Gonzaga with less than three minutes remaining in the match. Devitt finished the week of play with nine shots and three points in two games.

She Shoots, She Scores
Individual scoring was spread throughout the WAC last week. Boise State forward Abby Bernards and UTEP forward Stacy Bekkering led the league with two goals and four points apiece in three games. Five other players in the conference followed closely behind Bernards and Bekkering with three points on the week. Boise States Megan McCoy, Hawai`is Arlene Devitt, Rices Ashley Anderson, SMUs Sarah Harvey, and Tulsas Alexis Arment each posted one goal and one assist. Seventeen other players scored one goal each during the week.

Top Shot Stoppers
Tulsa freshman Abby Fahrig and Hawai`i junior Jennifer Churchill both posted 14 saves in two games for the week to lead t he WAC. Nevada junior keeper Jessica Gregg boasted the most saves in a game last with 11 against Utah State, while San Jose States Annemarie Hennes ended up with nine saves in more than 117 minutes.

Moving On Up
Another 2-0 week of play boosted SMU to a 4-0 overall record and the No. 16 spot in the polls. The Mustangs jumped eight places in the national polls, while their regional mark improved to No. 3, falling behind only Nebraska (3-0) and Texas A&M (1-1) in the Central Region. SMU defeated Houston, 2-1, and Oklahoma, who is ranked seventh in the Central Region, 1-0.

The WAC Against Ranked Opponents
WAC womens soccer collectively faces six nationally ranked opponents in eight games during the 2001 season. SMU tops the list with three ranked opponents in Stanford, Florida and Texas, who are ranked 5th, 16th and 18th, respectively. Fresno State, Hawai`i, Rice, San Jose State and Tulsa each have one ranked opponent apiece on this years schedule.

SMU to Play Host to WAC Championships, NCAA Womens College Cup
SMU will serve as the host school for the 2001 WAC Womens Soccer Championships as well as the 2001 NCAA Womens College Cup. Games will be played at Westcott Field in Dallas, Texas, on Nov. 7,8 and 10 for the conference tournament and Gerald J. Ford Stadium on Dec. 7 and 9 for the College Cup.
