Player of the Week
Rice freshman Ashley Anderson helped lead her squad to its first victory as a varsity team against Army on Aug. 31. The 5-foot-5 forward from Lucas, Texas, netted two goals for the Owls in their 3-2 win, including a game-winner with 1:18 left in the match. Boise State midfielder Megan McCoy, Hawai`i forward Arlene Devitt, SMU forward Lorrie Tipton, UTEP midfielder Holly Cohen, and Tulsa forward Melissa McCormick also earned nominations.
She Shoots, She Scores
Several players around the league racked up impressive offensive numbers last week. Boise State midfielder Megan McCoy topped the list with eight points off of three goals and two assists in two games. Tulsa forward Melissa McCormick, Rice forward Ashley Anderson and SMU forward Lorrie Tipton contributed four points off of two goals each. SMUs Sarah Harvey also notched one goal for the week while leading the conference with 11 shots. UTEP midfielder Holly Cohen came in second with 10 shots, one of which resulted in a game-winning goal for the Miners.
Top Shot Stoppers
Tulsa freshman goalkeeper Abby Fahrig posted 19 saves in two games for the week to lead the WAC. Janet Wildemuth, freshman keeper from Nevada, ended up second in the conference with 15 saves in two games last week, while Fresno States Erin McLeod finished the week with 10.
SMU Takes Boilermaker Classic
SMU posted victories over Miami (Ohio) and Purdue to top the Boilermaker Classic in West Lafayette, Ind., last weekend. After a 2-1 overtime battle with Miami (Ohio) on Friday, the Mustangs faced off against host Purdue Sunday afternoon. SMU improved to 2-0 on the season by picking up a 2-1 win against the Boilermakers in the championship game. Five Mustangs were chosen all-tournament, with forward Lorrie Tipton receiving Offensive MVP honors and goalkeeper Erin McLeod receiving Defensive MVP honors.
Moving On Up
Following a 2-0 first week of play, SMU moves up to No. 22 after not being ranked nationally in the preseason. The Mustangs kept their regional mark of No. 4, falling behind Nebraska (2-0), Texas A&M (0-0) and Texas (0-1) in the Central Region.
