UTEPs Aaron Egbele and Rices Allison Beckford have been named the Western Athletic Conference men's and women's indoor track and field athletes of the week, respectively.
Egbele, a senior from Irving, Texas, won the 55-meter dash at the Texas Tech Invitational on Jan. 26. His time of 6.21 met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard. Egbele also ran the second leg of the 1600-meter relay, as the UTEP unit finished third in 3:15.60.
Other mens athletes nominated included: Ryan Beckenhauer, Fresno State; Scott Loftin, Rice; and Dalibor Balgac, SMU.
Beckford, a junior from Sawannal-la-Mar, Westmoreland, Jamaica, took the title in the 400 meters with an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 54.56 at the LSU Invitational last weekend. She also ran the anchor leg of the victorious 1600-meter relay team that posted a time of 3:42.82, good for an NCAA provisional qualifying time.
Other womens athletes nominated included: Erica Scott, La. Tech; Crystal Simmons, Fresno State; Tracey Ball, SMU; Oluyemi Fagbamila; and Shana Robinson, Tulsa.
