DENVER Hawaii guard Mike McIntyre has been named the Western Athletic Conference mens basketball player of the week for Jan. 21-27.
McIntyre, a senior from Long Beach, Calif. (Long Beach Poly), came off the bench in two games and averaged 21.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in a pair of road victories for Hawaii. Coming into the two games, he was averaging 8.8 points on the season. McIntyre scored 20 points at Rice and was 4-of-7 from three-point range. He followed that up with a career-high 22 points at Tulsa and made 6-of-8 from long range. For the week, he shot .609 (14-23) from the field and .667 (10-15) from three-point range. He also added two assists in each contest. The two-game WAC weekend road sweep was just the sixth for the Rainbow Warriors in their history and marked the first time ever that Hawaii has swept two conference weekend road trips in the same season.
The other nominations were senior forward Abe Jackson, Boise State; junior forward Antonio Meeking, Louisiana Tech; freshman forward Michael Harris, Rice; junior guard Quinton Ross, SMU; and senior center Brian Stewart, UTEP.
