Fresno States Nick Fustar and Tulsas Aleksandra Durska have been named the Western Athletic Conference mens and womens tennis players of the week, respectively.
Fustar, a senior from Cupertino, Calif. (Monta Vista), pulled out one the biggest victories of his career on Jan. 24, defeating 13th-ranked Marcin Matkowski of UCLA, 7-6 (4), 3-6, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. Fustars win was the lone victory for the Bulldogs as the third-ranked Bruins won 6-1.
Durska, a junior from Pobiedziska, Poland led Tulsa to a perfect start on the season with a 3-0 record in both singles and doubles competition. Against Oral Roberts on Jan. 26, Durska blanked Claire Waltman, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 position and added and 8-2 doubles win with sophomore Mariana Barrios. Later that day versus Hampton, Durska played at No. 1 and defeated K. Pesatova, 7-5, 6-4 and again posted a doubles victory with Barrios. Durska completed the weekend with a 6-7, 6-2, 6-4 victory over Colorados Lia Domingo on Jan. 27 and an 8-2 doubles win at the No. 2 slot.
Tulsas Shri Sudhakara was also nominated for the men. Additional nominees for the women were Fresno States Kim Niggemeyer and Rices Judith Hagedorn.
