WAC SOCCER NOTEBOOK

OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEKDanielle Fauteux, a freshman from Kamloops, B.C., Canada, recorded her second hat trick of the season, scoring three goals in a 4-0 win over Drury. It is her second hat trick in the past three games. She was named to the Golden Hurricane Classic all-Tournament team.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Carol Moore, a junior from Dallas, Texas allowed just one goal in 192:56 minutes of play for a goals against average of 0.47. She went 2-0 on the weekend with one shutout. Moore came in off the bench to replace starter Kyla Clark who left with an ankle injury.

OTHERS NOMINATED Offensive - Abbe Roche of Boise State recored two goals and one assist for five points over the two games the Broncos played at the Mountain Classic in Flagstaff, Ariz. ... Mia Moe of Hawaii scored a pair of pivotal gaols for the Wahine, helping them to a 1-1-1 record ... Moe also earned all-Tournament honors at the OHANA Hotels and Resorts Shootout ... Miranda Cutherberson of UTEP scored two goals and one assists in the Miners 2-0 weekend, keeping them perfect on the season ... she had an assist on a game-winning overtime goal and scored the game winner in a 7-0 win over Alabama &M ... Defensive - Amy Ortmann of Boise State recorded her first two career starts for the Broncos recording two halves of shut out play, gathering a 1.33 GAA ... Jessica Uecker of Hawaii registered her first assist of the season on her way to helping the Wahine to a 4-0 shutout of Weber State.



WAC PLAY BEGINS THIS WEEK UTEPs 9-0 record will be put to test this week, as Western Athletic Conference play begins. The Miners and SMU will host travel partners Nevada and Boise State on Friday and Sunday, respectively. Rice and Tulsa will face off against Fresno State and San Jose State in Houston and Tulsa, respectively. Hawaii is the lone WAC team not in competition this weekend.

BOISE STATE - The Broncos traveled to Flagstaff, Ariz., for the Mountain Classic, where the Broncos took second, ousting host Northern Arizona by point differential ... Abbe Roche, Tara Milligan and Brittany Zoellner were all named to the all-Tournament team ... Abbe Roche recorded her ninth career assist against Southern Utah, making her the schools all-time leader in assists.

FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs are off to their worst start in school history at 1-9 ... Fresno State has faced the WACs toughest schedule, squaring off with Denver, who is currently 20th, Pepperdine (19), UCLA (3), California (6) and Pacific, who began the season ranked ... the current seven-game skid is the longest in school history ... Katri Nikso-Koivisto has five goals on the season which ties the high from last years squad.

HAWAII - The Wahine went 1-1-1 on the week, with a double overtime draw with Long Beach State ... leading scorer Natasha Kai was out this weekend due to illness ... junior Arlene Devitt upped her career records for points (56), goals (25) and shots (153) with a goal and assist against Weber State.

NEVADA - Wolf Pack keeper Megan Tarpenning registered 18 saves in the Packs two matches this weekend ... she now has a WAC-high 68 saves on the season ... Nevada opens the WAC weekend with the Texas swing, facing the hottest team in the WAC, UTEP and 2001 champions, SMU.

RICE - The Owls headed to Alabama, they suffered their sixth loss of the season and second tie ... Rice begins WAC play in California against Fresno State and San Jose State.

SAN JOSE STATE - Spartan net minder Erin Lavey has 53 saves this season on 126 shots faced ... The Spartans play host to conference pair Tulsa and Rice this opening weekend of WAC play.

SMU - The Mustangs have now played in five overtime matches this season, tying them with the season record of five (1996, 99, 00) ... with the loss to No. 24 Pepperdine, SMU posted its fourth loss this season, the same total from all of 2001 ... with its last game before conference play, SMU will take on cross-town rival TCU, who they have an all-time of 20-0-1 against.

UTEP - The Miners are off to their best start in program history at 9-0 ... in 1998 they opened 6-0, finishing first in the WACs Mountain Division at 13-6-1 ... in its ninth match of 2002, UTEP set a team record for goals in a season with 49, passing the 1997 squad that used 20 matches to get 46 ... the Miners have also equaled the 136 points, scored by the same 97 squad ... with 38 assists on the season, UTEP is six short of the season mark (1997) ... Kelly Parker broke the career scoring record with one gaol and two assists against Alabam A&M, with 66 points.

TULSA - The Golden Hurricane duo of Danielle Fauteux and Jamie German lead the team in goals and scoring ... Fauteux leads the team with seven goals and two assists for 16 points, while German has five assists and a pair of goals (9 points) ... Julie Twellman collected her 14th career assist against Drury tying her with Paige Mayer and Kelly Noonan for seventh all-time.

SMU, UTEP CENTRAL REGION TOP 10s UTEP, who is off to a 9-0 start, is tied for 10th in SoccerBuzz Magazines Central Region Top 10. SMU is receiving votes in the same poll. Texas heads the list, just ahead of Texas A&M, who SMU fell to, 2-1, in double overtime. SMU remains ninth in the NSCAA/adidas Central Region top 10. Texas and Texas A&M head that list as well.

MINERS, COWGIRLS, TIGERS, CARDINAL - Along with Oklahoma State (10-0), Princeton (7-0), Stanford (8-0), UTEP (9-0) is the only other team in the nation with a perfect record.

PIBULVECH CLOSES IN ON 200 Nevada head coach Dang Pibulvech needs just seven wins to reach the 200 win plateau. Pibulvech is currently 193-132-22 in his 19 years of coaching.

VAN LINDER EARNS 50TH WIN SMU head coach George Van Linder earned his 50th SMU win, in a 4-2 victory of Baylor (9/20). Van Linder posts a .694 winning percentage at SMU (50-19-3). He is currently 84-46-6 overall in his seven-year Divison I career.

PUTTING IN OVERTIME SMUs 0-0 tie with Loyola Maryount this on Sept. 27, was its fifth overtime game this season. The Mustangs are now 2-2-1 when entering the extra periods. Along with the Loyola Marymount draw, the Mustangs fell to Vanderbilt and Texas A&M, in double-overtime. The Lady Mustangs defeated Colorado College 3-2 in double OT, as well as knocked off Arizona State in one extra period, 2-1. The five overtimes tie for most ever in a season (1996, 99 and 00).

UTEP RECORD BREAKERS Senior Holly Cohen has already broken UTEPs single-season marks for goals (15) and points (35). Fellow senior Kelly Parker has also set a single-season mark for a Miner in just nine games, assisting on 13 goals. She is also the new career leader in assists with 23.

NEVADA GOES FOR FOURTH WIN The Nevada Wolf Pack need just one more win this season to tie the four wins the program posted in its first two seasons. The Wolf Pack face UC Irvine and Lond Beach State before heading into conference play.

WAC RECORD SETTER Hawaii freshman striker Natashai Kai, had 14 shots in the Wahine win over Long Island. The 14 shots is a new WAC single-game record. The record was formerly held by Stacie Savage of San Jose State, when she had 12 against Wyoming in 1997.

SMU FAVORED TO WIN 2002 WAC CROWN Defending Western Athletic Conference soccer champion SMU has been selected in a poll by the leagues coaches to defend its 2001 crown and earn its third-straight straight regular-season championship. SMU totaled seven first-place votes and tallied 63 points to top the poll. SMU is coming off a 16-4 season in 2001 in which the Mustangs earned their third WAC tournament title and an 8-0 conference record. Head coach George Van Linder welcomes back eight starters and 14 letterwinners, including WAC Player of the Year Tara Comfort and Freshman of the Year Jill Heinemann.

CONFERENCE DOMINANCE Defending regular season champions SMU once again finished the conference season undefeated. After going 6-0-1 in the 2000 season, the Mustangs managed an 8-0 record last season. They have not lost a regular season conference match since 1999. The Mustangs are 14-0-1 over the last two seasons. Their last defeat was a 1-0 loss to San Jose State on October 17, 1999. Since that loss, the Mustangs have not fallen in 18 straight conference matches.

FACING THE NATIONS BEST Nine teams that participated in the 2001 NCAA Tournament are opponents of WAC teams this season. National champion Santa Clara, UCLA, Denver, California, CS Fullerton, Texas A&M, Texas, Pepperdine and Kansas are all slated to face WAC teams in 2002.

WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HOUSTON Houston, Texas and Rice University will play host to the 2002 WAC Tournament. The championship will be played at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium, November 7-9. Six of the WACs nine participating schools make the tournament. The format will place the No. 3 seed against the No. 6 in the opening round, while seeds, 4 and 5 will square off. The 4/5 winner will face the No. 2 seed. The 2001 Championship was held at SMU, and the Mustangs took home the crown.

WOMENS COLLEGE CUP IN AUSTIN The 2002 edition of the NCAA Womens Soccer Championship will be held at Mike A. Meyers Stadium and Soccer Field on the campus of the University of Texas, December 6 and 8. The field of 64 will begin play hosts sites, November 15.
Teams are paired based on location. The top eight teams in the 64-team pool receive a seed. Seven of the top eight seeds serve as hosts for the first and second rounds, with nine additional schools hosting games. In the third round and quarterfinals, the team with the better record will serve as host.
