ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
MEN - Fernando Cabada, a junior from Clovis, Calif., finished in 14th at the Stanford Invitational with a time of 24:16 in the 8k race. This is the third time this season he has been the top Bulldog finisher. He helped the Bulldogs to a 15th place finish.

WOMEN - Karin van Rooyen, a sophomore from Lothiar, South Africa, grabbed a third place finish at the Stanford Invitational in the 4k event, with a time of 13:55. The event had 105 runners competing. She helped the Mustangs to a sixth-place finish.

OTHERS NOMINATED Men - Miles Wiscombe, Boise State; Carlos Arrizon, Louisiana Tech; Matt Heard, San Jose State .... Women - Robin Wemple, Boise State; Kara June, Fresno State; Victoria Chang, Hawaii; Emma Garrard, Nevada; Summer Bell, Rice; Judy DeLong, San Jose State.


NOTES FROM THE COURSE
Boise State stayed in state for the Bob Firman Invitational at Eagle Island in State Park, Idaho ... both the men and the women brought home the titles ... for the men, Miles Wiscombe led the way grabbing second in the 8k, just ahead of teammate Michael Ciampini with a time of 26:02 ... for the women, Robin Wemple picked up her second win of the season, winning the 5k event with a time of 18:25 ... behind her in third place was teammate Kayla Christensen.

Fresno State went down the road to Palo Alto, to compte in the Stanford Invitational ... the men were led by Fernando Cabada who finished 14th with a time of 24:16 ... it is the third time this season he has led the Bulldogs ... Kara June led the way for the women, taking 31st in the 6k event with a time of 22:12 ... it is also her third first-place team finish.

Hawaii had a split squad, competing in the Stanford Invitational and the BYU-Hawaii Invite ... Victoria Chang led the charge in Palo Alto, finishing eighth in the 4k ... on the island, Michelle Romance was the top Wahine finisher, taking 18th in the 5k with a time of 21:43.

Although both the Louisiana Tech men and women stayed in Louisiana, they head to different events ... the men traveled to Baton Rouge for the LSU Invite, where Carlos Arrizon led the way with a fourth-place finish (26:15, 8k) ... the women made the short trip to Shreveport, competing in the Christus Schumpert Red River Classic ... Moshando Sneed was the to Techster taking sixth with a time of 21:29.

The Nevada women continued its hot pace, finishing sixth at the Stanford Invitational ... the finish was the highest by a WAC team in the 6k ... Emma Garrard recorded her second-straight personal best with a ninth-place finish and a time of 21:15 ... teammate Jenna Huber was just behind her taking 25th.

The Rice women traveled east to Baron Rouge, La., for the LSU Invite, where they grabbed their second-consecutive team title ... the Owls were led by Summer Bells third-place, 22:19 performance in the 6k ... Bell has finished in the top five in all three races she has competed in this fall ... Whitney McAlpine finished fifth with a time of 22:37.

San Jose State had competitors in both the 4k and 6k at the Stanford Invitational ... for the men, Matt Heard led the way finished 54th in the 8k (25:20) ... on the womens side, Judy DeLong was the top Spartan in the 6k, finishing 75th with a time of 22:58 ... in the 4k, Janette Najera grabbed 74th with a time of 16:50.

The SMU women traveled west to the Stanford Invitational, where the Mustangs finished sixth, the highest WAC team in the 4k ... they were once again led by Karin van Rooyen, who finished third out of 105 runners with a time of 13:55 ... just behind her was teammate Emiy Field who finished fifth (14:33).

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD IN DALLAS Dallas, Texas and SMU will play host to the 2002 WAC Championships. The event will take place on Saturday, November 2. The Rice men and Tulsa women will both look to defend their titles from the 2001 Championship held in Hawaii.
