OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Natasha Kai, a freshman from Kahuku, Oahu, earned her second player of the week award, helping the Wahine to a 2-0 conference start. She posted just the second hat trick in school history against Tulsa, scoring three times in a 6-0 win. Kai registered nine points on the week, including 12 shots. She is now the schools freshman record holder for points (20), goals (9) and shots (61).
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Mahie Atay, a freshman from Wailuku, Maui, gathered two shutouts in the Wahines first weekend of conference play. She made 12 saves in over 160 minutes of play and has not allowed a goal in over 205 minutes of action.
OTHERS NOMINATED Offensive - Fresno States Kortney Lewis now leads the team with 16 points after scoring one goal and assisting on three others on a 1-1 weekend for the Bulldogs ... Brittany Zoellner of Boise State headed the offense for the Broncos against Nevada scoring the game-winning goal and assisting on another in a 2-1 conference win ...
Defensive - Amy Ortmann of Boise State recorded her third win of the season, allowing just one goal against Nevada on a penalty kick.
WEEK THREE IN THE WAC San Jose State steps out of conferece to face 2001 National Champion Santa Clara, October 15. The Broncos are 8-3-1 and are ranked fifth nationally. The Spartans will also play host to Boise State (5-6-1, 1-2) and head to Nevada (3-11, 0-3) for a pair of conference match ups over the weekend. Fresno State (3-11, 2-2) heads to Nevada on October 17, then heads north to face Boise State on October 20. UTEP (12-1, 3-1) looks to rebound after its first loss of the season falling to Fresno State, 2-0 last weekend. The Miners play host to Hawaii (5-5-2, 2-0) in their only match-up of the weekend on October 18. Rice faces a pair of teams from Tulsa, as they host Oral Roberts (7-5-1) on October 18 and Tulsa (4-6-2, 1-1-1) October 20. SMU (7-4-3, 3-0-1) plays host to Houston (6-6-2) on October 18, then conference foe Hawaii on October 20.
WAC NCAA LEADERS - UTEP is in the top three in the NCAA in three categories. The Miners lead the nation, averaging 5.31 goals per match, scoring 69 goals on the season. Their 0.923 winning percentage is third best in the country.
UTEPs Holly Cohen is second in the nation in points per match (3.58), while fellow Miners Miranda Cuthberson (3.00) and Kelly Parker (2.54) are sixth and 11th, respectively. Cohen is also third in goals per match (1.50) while Cuthberson is tied for sixth (1.23) and Hawaii freshman Natasha Kai is tied for 16th (1.00). Parker leads the nation in assists per contest with 1.15, being one of only three players in the nation averaging atleast 1.00; Cohen (0.58) is tied for 26th. Nevadas Megan Tarpenning is 14th in the country in save per match with 7.93.
THIS WEEK AGAINST THE TOP 25 - San Jose State steps out of conference play on Tuesday, October 15 for a match-up with No. 5 Santa Clara. The Broncos were crowned the 2001 National Champions and are 8-3-1 on the season. Last season these two teams met in San Jose, with Santa Clara winning 8-0. This years match is in Santa Clara. The WAC is 0-9-1 this season against the West Coast Conference and is 0-8-1 against the top 25.
IN THE NET BOISE STATE - The Broncos picked up their first WAC win of the season defeating Nevada 2-1 ... Amy Ortmann earned her third win in four starts, as the Wolf Packs only goal came on a penalty kick.
FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs put a hault to UTEPs 12-match winning streak, shuting out the high powered offense of the Miners, 2-0 ... each of Fresno States three wins this season have come in the form of shutouts, defeating Southern Utah, 4-0, and Rice and UTEP, 2-0 ... the 11 losses on the season are tied for the most ever by a Bulldog squad.
HAWAII - The Wahine earned a pair of shutouts, knocking off Tulsa, 6-0 and Rice, 1-0 to open conference play on the island ... Hawaii goal keeping has not allowed a goal in over 285 minutes of play ... midfielder Carmen Calpo broke the schools freshman assists record with six.
NEVADA - The Wolf Pack are looking for their first-ever WAC win as they host Fresno State on October 17 ... Leisha Makinano picked up her first goal of the season, scoring the lone Pack goal in a 5-1 loss to San Diego State.
RICE - The Owls only contest this weekend was on the island, as they fell to Hawaii, 1-0 ... Rice will step out of conference and try to grab its second win of the year on Friday, as they host Oral Roberts who is 6-6-2.
SAN JOSE STATE - The Spartans are looking to pick up their first win since Sept. 20, a double-overtime 3-2 win over Vermont ... junior Marie McCann had a pair of assists in a 2-2 tie with SMU, both came off corner kicks.
SMU - The Mustangs overtime match with San Jose State was the schools seventh of the season, adding to their season record ... the Mustangs have not lost a WAC match in 19 tries ... their last loss came to San Jose State in 1999 ... SMU has two matches at home this weekend, where they are 17-3 over the past three seasons.
UTEP - The Miners suffered their first loss of the season, falling to Fresno State in California, 2-0 ... the loss ended the nations best win streak ... Holly Cohen (43), Miranda Cuthberson (39) and Kelly Parker (33) are the top three point scorers in a single season in school history.
TULSA - This is the first time the Golden Hurricane began the conference season 1-1-1 since 1997 ... Danielle Fauteux has the most points by a freshman with her eight goals and three assists (19 points) since 1999, when Julie Twellman had 23.
UTEP IN CENTRAL REGION TOP 10 UTEP, who is off to an 12-1 start, is 8th in SoccerBuzz Magazines Central Region Top 10. Texas heads the list, just ahead of Texas A&M.
CONFERENCE DOMINANCE Defending regular season champions SMU finished the 2001 conference season undefeated. After going 6-0-1 in the 2000 season, the Mustangs managed an 8-0 record last season. They have not lost a regular season conference match since 1999. The Mustangs are 17-0-2 over the last two seasons. Their last defeat was a 1-0 loss to San Jose State on October 17, 1999. Since that loss, the Mustangs have not fallen in 19-straight conference matches.
TURNING TRICKS WAC competitors have turned in 10 total three-goal hat tricks this season. There was one all of last season (Arlene Devitt, UH). UTEP, and its high-scoring offense have six on the season; two by Holly Cohen and Miranda Cuthberson and one each from Kelly Parker and Kate Stevens. Tulsa freshman Danielle Fauteux has a pair, while Hawaiis Natasha Kai and SMUs Kim Harvey have both notched one.
PIBULVECH CLOSES IN ON 200 Nevada head coach Dang Pibulvech needs just seven wins to reach the 200 win plateau. Pibulvech is currently 193-136-22 (.581) in his 19 years of coaching.
VAN LINDER EARNS 50TH WIN SMU head coach George Van Linder earned his 50th SMU win, in a 4-2 victory of Baylor (9/20). Van Linder posts a .721 winning percentage at SMU (53-19-5). He is currently 87-46-8 overall in his seven-year Divison I career.
RECORD SETTING OVERTIMES SMUs 2-2 draw with San Jose State (10/13) was its seventh of the season. Along with the Spartan match, SMU tied with TCU (10/2) in its sixth extra-period match of the season. The Mustangs are currently 2-2-3 in those affairs. SMU tied with Loyola Maryount on Sept. 27, 0-0. Along with the three draws, the Mustangs fell to Vanderbilt and Texas A&M, in double-overtime. The Lady Mustangs defeated Colorado College 3-2 in double OT, as well as knocked off Arizona State in one extra period, 2-1. SMU had five overtimes in a season thre times before (1996, 99 and 00).
UTEP RECORD BREAKERS Senior Holly Cohen has broke UTEPs single-season marks for goals (18) and points (43). Fellow senior Kelly Parker has also set a single-season mark for a Miner, assisting on 15 goals. Along with her assists, she has nine goals on the season for 33 points. She is also the new career leader in assists with 25. Miranda Cuthberson has 39 points on the season. The three are now the top three single-season points leaders in UTEP history.
WAC RECORD SETTERS Miranda Cuthberson assisted on four goals in a 10-1 win over Boise State (10/6), tying her with former Miner Jennifer Biondi, who posted four against Troy State in 1997, for most all-time in a single match. The mark is a new WAC-match record. ---- Hawaii freshman striker Natasha Kai, had 14 shots in the Wahine win over Long Island (9/19). The 14 shots are a new WAC single-game record. The record was formerly held by Stacie Savage of San Jose State, when she had 12 against Wyoming in 1997.

SMU FAVORED TO WIN 2002 WAC CROWN Defending Western Athletic Conference soccer champion SMU has been selected in a poll by the leagues coaches to defend its 2001 crown and earn its third-straight straight regular-season championship. SMU totaled seven first-place votes and tallied 63 points to top the poll. SMU is coming off a 16-4 season in 2001 in which the Mustangs earned their third WAC tournament title and an 8-0 conference record. Head coach George Van Linder welcomes back eight starters and 14 letterwinners, including WAC Player of the Year Tara Comfort and Freshman of the Year Jill Heinemann.
FACING THE NATIONS BEST Nine teams that participated in the 2001 NCAA Tournament are opponents of WAC teams this season. National champion Santa Clara, UCLA, Denver, California, CS Fullerton, Texas A&M, Texas, Pepperdine and Kansas are all slated to face WAC teams in 2002.
WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HOUSTON Houston, Texas and Rice University will play host to the 2002 WAC Tournament. The championship will be played at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium, November 7-9. Six of the WACs nine participating schools make the tournament. The format will place the No. 3 seed against the No. 6 in the opening round, while seeds, 4 and 5 will square off. The 4/5 winner will face the No. 2 seed. The 2001 Championship was held at SMU, and the Mustangs took home the crown.
WOMENS COLLEGE CUP IN AUSTIN The 2002 edition of the NCAA Womens Soccer Championship will be held at Mike A. Meyers Stadium and Soccer Field on the campus of the University of Texas, December 6 and 8. The field of 64 will begin play hosts sites, November 15.
Teams are paired based on location. The top eight teams in the 64-team pool receive a seed. Seven of the top eight seeds serve as hosts for the first and second rounds, with nine additional schools hosting games. In the third round and quarterfinals, the team with the better record will serve as host.
