ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Yan Chen, a freshman from Da Lian, Peoples Republic of China, won both the 200-yard freestyle (1:51.25) and 200-IM (2:04.72), while finishing second in the 200-butterfly (2:04.22). She was also the anchor leg of the 200-freestyle relay that finished with a time of 1:37.57. The Rainbow Wahine fell to Pacific in the dual, 171-113.

OTHERS NOMINATED Charlotte Pierce of San Jose State won the 50 free with a time of 25.15 and the 100 fly (59.02) en route to a 140-112 loss to Washington State. She also took second in the 200 free (1:58.48).


TEAM NOTES
FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs began their season against WAC foe Nevada, falling to the Wolf Pack, 167-121. Danielle Irle, who had been the Bulldogs head coach for the past 10 seasons, announced her resignation to move on and be the head coach for Tulane University. Tulane will be resurrecting its womens swimming and diving program next season. Fresno Stateesnext competition is this weekend at the Pacific Swimming Invite.

HAWAII - The Rainbow Wahine host their first event of the season, the Senior Circuit. There was no team scoring for this event. In a dual against Pacific, again hosted by Hawaii at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Center, the Wahine fell, 171-113. Their next event is the Big West Shootout, Nov. 1-2.

NEVADA - The Wolf Pack defeated Fresno State in their first dual of the season, 167-121. Nevada has a tough weekend ahead of them, as they travel to Lincoln, Neb. There they will compete against Nebraska on Thursday, in the Nebraska Sprint Challenge on Friday and the adidas Invitational on Saturday.

RICE - After two early events, the Owls are off until a dual meet with Houston, Nov. 1. There was no team scoring at the Bayou City Relays. In the the dual with North Texas, Rice topped the Green Wave, 114-86.

SAN JOSE STATE - The Spartans suffered a loss to Washington State in their first meet of the season, 140-112.

SMU - The Mustangs look to defend their 2001 title, beginning the season, Wednesday against TCU. Keeping pace with the rest of the WAC, SMU will host the SMU Womens Classic Oct. 25-26.

WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD IN SAN ANTONIO The 2002 WAC Tournament will in San Antonio, Texas at the Palo Alto College Natatorium, February 26-March 1. SMU won the 2003 crown, landing its sixth title in as many years.
