OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Miranda Cutherberson, a senior from Kamloops, B.C., Canada, recorded her second hat trick of the season, scoring three goals and one assist in a 6-0 win over WAC foe Nevada. She had five goals and five assists for 15 points over two conference matches. She had a school-record four assists in the 10-1 win over Boise State, adding two goals. The four assists also tie a WAC single-match high with Jennifer Biondi of UTEP against Troy State in 1997.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Erin McLeod, a sophomore from Calgary, Alberta, Canada, allowed just one goal in three matches, earning a 0.31 goals against average. She has a 0.81 save percentage this season. On the week she had 12 saves in 290 minutes, pitching two shutouts.

OTHERS NOMINATED Offensive - Betsy Huete of Rice scord the first goal of her career against San Jose State from 30 yards out helping the Owls to their first win of the sesaon ... Jill Heinemann of SMU scored three goals on seven shots on goal, with two assists for eight points on the week .. she led the Mustangs to a 2-0-1 record ... Julie Twellman of Tulsa scored two goals in the first weekend of WAC competition, leading the Hurricane to a 1-1 week ... Defensive - Sarah Ramirez of UTEP held Nevada to just six shots in a 6-0 shutout ... she also limited Boise State to only nine shots in a 10-1 win.


WEEK TWO IN THE WAC Hawaii is the lone WAC team yet to face a conference opponent, but open WAC play this weekend on the island against Tulsa on Friday and Rice on Sunday. SMU and UTEP head to California. The Mustangs (2-0) will face Fresno State (1-1) on Thursday and San Jose State Sunday. UTEP (2-0) will take on the Spartans Friday and the Bulldogs Sunday. Travel partners Boise State (0-2) and Nevada (0-2) square off in Boise on Friday. Nevada then steps out of conference to host San Diego State.

WAC NCAA LEADERS - UTEP leads the NCAA in three categories. The Miners are averaging 5.91 goals per match, have 65 goals on the season and are one of two teams (Princeton) who yet to either lose or tie on, giving them a 1.000 winning percentage.

UTEPs Holly Cohen leads the nation in points per match (4.10), while fellow Miners Miranda Cuthberson (3.27) and Kelly Parker (2.82) are fifth and eighth, respectively. Cohen is also second in goals per match (1.82) while Cuthberson is fifth (1.36). Parker leads the nation in assists per contest with 1.36, being the only player in the nation averaging more than one. Cohen (0.70) and Keletia Roberts (0.64) are tied for 12th and 19th, respectively. Nevadas Megan Tarpenning is 14th in the country in save per match with 8.08.

TWO PERFECT - UTEP (11-0), along with Princeton (9-0) are the only teams left in the NCAA who are perfect on the season. UTEPs run is the best in school history. With no losses or ties, the Miners are also the NCAA highest scoring team, averaging 5.91 goals per match.

IN THE NET-
BOISE STATE - The Broncos scored only one goal in the opening weekend of WAC play, as they fell to 0-2 in conference ... in only one match this coming weekend, they will host Nevada.

FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs is looking for its first home win this season, but it wont come easy ... Fresno State plays host to 2001 Champion SMU and this season hottest team undefeated UTEP ... the Bulldogs have split the last seven WAC weekends dating back to 2000.

HAWAII - The Wahine had the weekend off, being the only WAC school to not face a conference opponent ... they begin play this weekend on the island facing Tulsa and Rice.

NEVADA - The Wolf Pack were shutout this past weekend, allowing 11 goals ... they have now been shutout for three-straight matches ... Megan Tarpenning continues to lead the WAC in saves, registering 29 more over the first WAC weekend.

RICE - The Owls picked up their first win of the season, knocking off San Jose State, 3-1 ... Betsy Huete grabbed her first career goal, in the win.

SAN JOSE STATE - The Spartan offense has scored only four goals in their last six matches ... SJSU is 0-4-2 on that stretch ... in WAC play, the Spartans opened 0-1-1 falling to Rice, for the Owls first win of the season, and taking the Hurricane to double overtime before a 2-2 draw.

SMU - The Mustangs overtime match with TCU was the schools sixth of the season, setting a record ... the Mustangs have not lost a WAC match in 17 tries ... their last loss came to San Jose State in 1999 ... they hold a 6-1 series advantage over Fresno State and a 3-2 lead over the Spartans.

UTEP - The Miners continued to break school records as senior Holly Cohen broke the schools career record for goals with a pair against Boise State, giving her 26 in two seasons ... through 11 matches, UTEPs 5.81 goals per match is second-best in NCAA history behind Cincinnati who finished with 6.0 gpm.

TULSA - Golden Hurricane senior Julie Twellman moved one step higher to to the schools all-time points list ... her four points against Fresno State upped her total to 64, placing her eighth ... the pair of goals mover her total to 25, also eighth ... Danielle Fauteux owns a pair of hat tricks this season, in doing so, she is only the fourth Hurricane in school history to notch a pair of hat tricks in one season.

SMU, UTEP CENTRAL REGION TOP 10s UTEP, who is off to an 11-0 start, is 8th in SoccerBuzz Magazines Central Region Top 10. SMU is receiving votes in the same poll. Texas heads the list, just ahead of Texas A&M, who SMU fell to, 2-1, in double overtime. SMU fell out of the NSCAA/adidas Central Region top 10. Texas and Texas A&M head that list as well.

CONFERENCE DOMINANCE Defending regular season champions SMU once again finished the conference season undefeated. After going 6-0-1 in the 2000 season, the Mustangs managed an 8-0 record last season. They have not lost a regular season conference match since 1999. The Mustangs are 16-0-1 over the last two seasons. Their last defeat was a 1-0 loss to San Jose State on October 17, 1999. Since that loss, the Mustangs have not fallen in 18-straight conference matches.

PIBULVECH CLOSES IN ON 200 Nevada head coach Dang Pibulvech needs just seven wins to reach the 200 win plateau. Pibulvech is currently 193-134-22 (.616) in his 19 years of coaching.

VAN LINDER EARNS 50TH WIN SMU head coach George Van Linder earned his 50th SMU win, in a 4-2 victory of Baylor (9/20). Van Linder posts a .720 winning percentage at SMU (52-19-4). He is currently 86-46-7 overall in his seven-year Divison I career.

RECORD SETTING OVERTIMES SMUs 1-1 draw with TCU (10/2) was its sixth extra-period match of the season, going 2-2-2 in those affairs. SMU tied with Loyola Maryount on Sept. 27, 0-0. Along with the two draws, the Mustangs fell to Vanderbilt and Texas A&M, in double-overtime. The Lady Mustangs defeated Colorado College 3-2 in double OT, as well as knocked off Arizona State in one extra period, 2-1. SMU had five overtimes in a season thre times before (1996, 99 and 00).

UTEP RECORD BREAKERS Senior Holly Cohen has already broken UTEPs single-season marks for goals (17) and points (41). Fellow senior Kelly Parker has also set a single-season mark for a Miner in just nine games, assisting on 13 goals. She is also the new career leader in assists with 23.

NEVADA GOES FOR FOURTH WIN The Nevada Wolf Pack need just one more win this season to tie the four wins the program posted in its first two seasons. The Wolf Pack face UC Irvine and Lond Beach State before heading into conference play.

WAC RECORD SETTERS Miranda Cuthberson assisted on four goals in a 10-1 win over Boise State (10/6), tying her with former Miner Jennifer Biondi, who posted four against Troy State in 1997, for most all-time in a single match. The mark is a new WAC-match record. ---- Hawaii freshman striker Natasha Kai, had 14 shots in the Wahine win over Long Island. The 14 shots is a new WAC single-game record. The record was formerly held by Stacie Savage of San Jose State, when she had 12 against Wyoming in 1997.

SMU FAVORED TO WIN 2002 WAC CROWN Defending Western Athletic Conference soccer champion SMU has been selected in a poll by the leagues coaches to defend its 2001 crown and earn its third-straight straight regular-season championship. SMU totaled seven first-place votes and tallied 63 points to top the poll. SMU is coming off a 16-4 season in 2001 in which the Mustangs earned their third WAC tournament title and an 8-0 conference record. Head coach George Van Linder welcomes back eight starters and 14 letterwinners, including WAC Player of the Year Tara Comfort and Freshman of the Year Jill Heinemann.

FACING THE NATIONS BEST Nine teams that participated in the 2001 NCAA Tournament are opponents of WAC teams this season. National champion Santa Clara, UCLA, Denver, California, CS Fullerton, Texas A&M, Texas, Pepperdine and Kansas are all slated to face WAC teams in 2002.

WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HOUSTON Houston, Texas and Rice University will play host to the 2002 WAC Tournament. The championship will be played at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium, November 7-9. Six of the WACs nine participating schools make the tournament. The format will place the No. 3 seed against the No. 6 in the opening round, while seeds, 4 and 5 will square off. The 4/5 winner will face the No. 2 seed. The 2001 Championship was held at SMU, and the Mustangs took home the crown.

WOMENS COLLEGE CUP IN AUSTIN The 2002 edition of the NCAA Womens Soccer Championship will be held at Mike A. Meyers Stadium and Soccer Field on the campus of the University of Texas, December 6 and 8. The field of 64 will begin play hosts sites, November 15.

Teams are paired based on location. The top eight teams in the 64-team pool receive a seed. Seven of the top eight seeds serve as hosts for the first and second rounds, with nine additional schools hosting games. In the third round and quarterfinals, the team with the better record will serve as host.
