SMU Advances to Field of 32 Defeating Texas; Falls to Texas A&M in Shootout

College Station, Texas -- The SMU women's soccer team experienced a bit of deja vu' Friday night in beating 11th-ranked Texas, 2-1, in the first round of the 2002 NCAA Tournament in College Station. In fact, the same thing took place last year when SMU defeated the Longhorns in first round play in College Station. With Friday night's victory, SMU improves to 13-5-4 and will face third-ranked Texas A&M Sunday afternoon at 1:30 p.m. The Aggies defeated Northwestern State Friday by the score of 8-0.

College Station, Texas -- The SMU women's soccer team's season came to a screeching halt Sunday afternoon in College Station as third-ranked Texas A&M took SMU to the penalty kick phase after a 1-1 score and 110 minutes of play. After connecting on their first two PK's, the Lady Mustangs could not get the next three shots past Aggie goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak, giving Texas A&M the right to advance to the NCAA Tournament round of 16 by the score of 3-2 in the penalty kicks. As a result, SMU closes out its season with a record of 13-5-5 while the Aggies improve to 18-4-2.
