DENVER, Colo. The 2002 WAC Volleyball Tournament begins Friday in Reno, Nev. This is the fourth year that the state of Nevada has been the site of the WAC Volleyball Tournament, but this is the first season that the University of Nevada has hosted. Las Vegas hosted the tournament the first three years (1996-98). Last season, San Jose hosted the tournament.
Starting this season, eight of the 10 WAC teams will compete in the tournament. On Friday, Nov. 22, the first session match times are scheduled for 12:00 and 2:00 p.m. Top-seeded Hawaii will take on No. 8 Louisiana Tech in the first match. In the second match No. 4 San Jose State will battle No. 5 Rice. Second session times are slated for 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. No. 2 Fresno State will take on No. 7 SMU in the first match of session two. Host school and No. 3 Nevada will face No. 6 UTEP in the second match. On Saturday, Nov. 23, the winners of the Hawaii/Louisiana Tech match and the San Jose State/Rice match will play at 5:00 p.m. At 7:00 p.m., the winners of the Fresno State/SMU match and the Nevada/UTEP match will meet. The WAC championship match is scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 24. All times are Pacific Standard Time.
For the fourth year out of five, Hawaii holds the No. 1 seed. The Rainbow Wahine ended the WAC season a perfect 13-0 record and a 25-1 record overall. The only blemish coming against current No. 1 Stanford. Hawaii is the reigning WAC Tournament champion, also taking the title in 1998. Fresno State, coming of a 22-5 regular season, takes the second seed, while host school Nevada holds the No. 3 seed. Another Western Division team, San Jose State is the tournaments No. 4 seed, followed by Eastern Division champion Rice as the No. 5 seed. The tournament is rounded out by a trio of Eastern Division schools: No. 6 UTEP, No. 7 SMU and No. 8 Louisiana Tech.
Tickets for the 2002 WAC Volleyball Tournament are on sale to the public now. Ticket prices are $30 for adults and $15 for children and students for an all-session pass (7 matches). All seats are general admission and prices apply to all age groups. Tickets may be purchased at the University of Nevada Athletic Ticket Office or by calling (775) 348-PACK (7225).
