RENO, Nev. Second seeded Fresno State edged out seventh seed SMU, 30-21, 30-26, 30-28 to advance to Saturdays semifinal match. The Bulldogs move to 23-5 on the season, while the Mustangs finished their season 12-17. Fresno State advanced to the semifinals last season before fallikng to eventual champion, Hawaii.
The Bulldogs out hit the Mustangs, .282 to .169, helping them to advance to their second straight semifinals. Four bulldogs hit above .350, with Whitney Arena leading the way hitting .500. Both Kristen Fenton and Java Johnson hit .400 for the Bulldogs, with 17 and 13 kills, respectively.
For the Mustangs, Allison Holder hit .263 with seven kills. Katy Moffetts 16 kills was second only to Arenas (FS) 17. Moffett finished the night hitting .205. This was the third-straight year that SMU has lost in its opening match.
Fresno State will face the winner of No. 3 Nevada and No. 6 UTEP at 7:30 p.m (PT), Saturday.
