OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Kim Harvey, a junior from Garland, Texas, earned her second player of the week award this year, scoring one goal and assisting on another, in a, 3-1, win over UTEP in a match that decided the regular-season conference champion. Harvey leads SMU with 14 goals on the season, a career high. She has four goals and an assist in her last four matches.

DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK Carrie Schnarre, a freshman from Lake St. Louis, Mo., helped the Golden Hurricane to a 1-0-2 record, assisting on two goals and scoring another. She anchored a defense that allowed just two goals and registered a shutout, with two matches going into two overtimes. Schnarre recorded her first career goal, as she scored the game winner against Boise State.

OTHERS NOMINATED Offensive Holly Lorman of Tulsa had two goals for four points as the Hurricane went 1-0-2 on the week ... Defensive none


2002 WAC POST SEASON HONORS
Regular season conference champion SMU places six on the 2002 all Western Athletic Conference first team. Freshman forward Natasha Kai of Hawaii picks up two honors, being named both the Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year. This is the first time that the same person has won both awards in the same season. UTEP head coach, Kevin Cross, was named Coach of the Year by his peers after a 15-2 season.

Cross, a graduate of Austin College, led the Miners to a 15-2 mark, 6-2 in conference play. The Miners began the season 12-0, and lead the nation in goals per match (4.53) and total goals (77).

Kai, a native of Kahuku, Oahu, grabbed both top individual honors with a record-breaking season. The freshman forward scored 10 goals in conference play, breaking the old mark of nine, averaging 1.25 goals per match. She tallied 23 points in conference, also a new WAC record. She was the main force in the late season dominance by Hawaii, scoring four game-winning goals. Kai was named WAC Player of Week three times (Sept. 3, Oct. 14, Oct. 28), scoring two hat tricks in WAC play.

SMU landed its third straight WAC title behind the play of its defense. Sophomore goalkeeper Erin McLeod earned her second-straight first team honor, leading the league with four shutouts. Preseason Player of the Year, senior forward Tara Comfort and 2001 Freshman of the Year Jill Heinemann, were both named to the first team. Three of the Mustangs back line were also selected. Defenders Sasha Andrews, Amanda Jordan and Diana Kelm are all first teamers.

Hawaii and UTEP each placed two on the first team, while Tulsa rounds out the team with one. Along with Kai, midfielder Erin Quattromani, who set a new WAC record for assists with seven in conference play, is the only other Rainbow Wahine on the first team. From UTEP, senior forward Holly Cohen and senior midfielder Kelly Parker, were both named all-WAC. Cohen led the league in points this season with 45, while Parkers 17 assists are a new WAC single-season record. Freshman Danielle Fauteux posted three hat tricks being one of two freshman on the first team.

The WAC Championship tournament begins Thursday, November 7, with four teams playing in the quarterfinal round at the Rice Soccer Stadium in Houston, Texas. Fourth-seeded Tulsa takes on fifth-seeded Fresno State at 5:30 p.m. Central time, while third-seeded Hawaii and sixth-seeded Rice face off at 7:30 p.m. The winners advance to the semifinals to play top-seeded SMU and second-seed UTEP, respectively.

2002 WAC TOURNAMENT FIELD SET Houston, Texas and Rice University will play host to the 2002 WAC Tournament. The championship will be played at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium, November 7-9. This seasons WAC Tournament field, was filled on the final day of the regular season. Rices 2-0 win over Nevada clinched the sixth and final spot. The field is set with regular season champion, SMU as the top seed. Both the Mustangs and UTEP, the No. 2 seed, earn a bye to Friday. Hawaii earned the No. 3 seed as they defeated Fresno State, 1-0 in overtime, Nov. 1. Tulsa moved ahead of Fresno State, taking over the fourth seed. The Bulldogs and the Hurricane sport the same winning percentage, but Tulsa won the head-to-head, 2-1. Rice rounds out the field as the sixth seed with a 3-5 conference mark. The following are the times and seeds for the 2002 WAC Soccer Championship.

WAC NCAA LEADERS UTEP is in the top 10 in three NCAA categories. The Miners lead the nation, averaging 4.53 goals per match, scoring 77 goals on the season, 17 higher than the next team. Their 0.882 winning percentage is tied for seventh in the country. Hawaii moved into a tie for 25th in the nation with its 2.58 goals per match.

UTEPs Holly Cohen is fourth in the nation in points per match (2.81), while fellow Miners Miranda Cuthbertson (2.53) and Kelly Parker (2.44) are ninth and 13th, respectively. Hawaiis Natasha Kai is 11th with 2.31 per contest. Cohen is also sixth in goals per match (1.19) while Cuthbertson is ninth (1.06) and Kai is tied for 12th (1.00). Parker is second in the nation in assists per contest with 1.00, one of only two with atlease one per match. Nevadas Megan Tarpenning is 18th in the country in saves per match with 7.21.

REGULAR SEASON CHAMPION SMU earned its second-straight regular season WAC crown as the Mustangs defeated UTEP, 3-1, in Dallas. SMU improved to 10-5-4 (6-1-1 WAC) and enters the WAC Tournament as the top seed. UTEP snaped a three-game winning streak and falls to 15-2 overall (6-2 WAC).

CHAMPIONSHIP PREVIEW SMU earned its third-straight WAC regular season crown, sixth over all. The Mustangs defeated UTEP, 3-1, in their final match of the season to clinch the No. 1 seed heading into this years tournament. They are led by Kim Harvey and Jill Heinemann. Harvey leads the Mustangs with 14 goals this season, seven in WAC play. Heinemann notched five goals in conference play, becoming one of the best midfielders in the WAC in just her second season. Goalkeeper Erin McLeod had four WAC shutouts to lead the conference. Lauren Mussallem set a new conference-play assist record with seven.

UTEP was the surprise team of the season, going 15-2 after being picked eighth in the preseason coaches poll. The Miners began the season 12-0, before falling to WAC foe Fresno State, 2-0, Oct. 13. The Miners were an offensive powerhouse all season. They finished with new conference-play records in points (86), goals (28) and assists (30). The senior trio of Miranda Cuthbertson, Holly Cohen and Kelly Parker set school single-season records in each major offensive cateogry. Cohens 19 goals and 45 points are each records, while Parkers 17 assists are a new WAC record. Along with her assists, she has 39 points and 11 goals. Cuthbertson tallied eight goals and 43 points on the season. The three finished the season ranked one, two and three in points. The Miners allowed only 16 goals all season, a new WAC, single-season mark.

A Hawaii late-season charge earned them the No. 3 seed in the tournament. The Rainbow Wahine won eight of their last 10 matches, including a 1-0 overtime against Fresno State to clinich the number three spot. Freshman Natasha Kai had 10 goals in conference play (four game winning), a new WAC record. Kai also had three assists, giving her 23 points in conference play, also a new WAC record. The 2002 preseason all-WAC member Arlene Devitt added four goals. Erin Quattromani added seven assists in conference play, a new WAC record.

Moving up to the No. 4 seed on the final day of the regular season was Tulsa. The Hurricane became the first WAC team to defeat SMU since San Jose State in 1999, when the they ousted SMU, 2-1, on October 25. Freshman Danielle Fauteux had a conference-high three hat tricks in 2002, leading the Hurricane with 28 points. Freshman goalkeeper Kelly Wilson had 17 saves in the win over SMU, a school high and just one short of the conference mark. She was tops in WAC play averaging 7.62 saves per match.

Fresno State, who had one of the toughest schedules in the WAC landed the No. 5 seed. The Bulldogs squared off with five top 25 opponents, including Denver, Pepperdine, UCLA, California, and Cal State Fullerton. Katri Nokso-Koivisto and Kortney Lewis led the way for Fresno State, combining for 15 goals on the season. One key to the Bulldogs conference success, was the play of goalkeeper Mary-tyler Wahl. Wahl had three conference shutouts, second in the WAC.

Rice squeezed its way into the tournament on the final weekend of the regular season. The Owls came into the final weekend, essentially needing a sweep of Boise State and Nevada to guarantee a place in the tournament. Rice defeated Boise State, 3-2, and Nevada, 2-0, to land the sixth seed. Midfielder Sara Yoder and defender Kelly Potysman, were key in Rices conference wins. Goalkeeper Amanda Garrison picked up 36 saves in conference play.

2002 WAC TEAM RECORD SETTERS There were many single-season and conference-season records broken in 2002. With the offensive power UTEP showed in non-conference play, they have broken many records. As a team, UTEP had 30 assists in conference play, a new WAC record. Hawaii had 20 in 2001. The Miners 69 assists were three short of the record held by BYU in 1996. UTEP earned 86 points in WAC play, passing SMUs 2001 mark of 70, a new WAC-season record. The Miners 223 points all season were 28 shy of the season mark set by BYU in 96. UTEP also allowed only 16 goals all season, breaking the old mark of 18 held by Hawaii (99), San Diego State (98) and SMU (97).

2002 WAC INDIVIDUAL RECORD SETTERS UTEPs Kelly Parker has became the single-season assist leader, with a 17 assists in 2002, passing BYUs Jennifer Love who had 12 in 1996. In WAC play, Lauren Mussallem of SMU and Erin Quattromani of Hawaii each had seven assists, a new WAC-play record. Miranda Cuthbertson and Kaleita Roberts both assisted on four goals in a 10-1 win over Boise State (10/6), tying them with former Miner Jennifer Biondi, who posted four against Troy State in 1997, for most all-time in a single match. The mark is best in a conference match. Freshman Natasha Kai had 23 points in WAC play, breaking the record held by Kim Harvey of SMU, who had 20 in 2001. Kai posted 10 goals in WAC play, passing the mark of nine also set by Harvey in 01. Kai also had 14 shots in the Wahine win over Long Island (9/19). The 14 shots are a new WAC single-match record. The record was formerly held by Stacie Savage of San Jose State, when she had 12 against Wyoming in 1997. Nevadas Megan Tarpenning had 137 saves on the season, tying her with Amanda Smith (1998) of UTEP.

END OF THE DOMINANCE SMU was handed its first WAC loss since falling, 1-0, to San Jose State in 1999, when the Mustangs were defeated by Tulsa, 2-1 (Oct. 25). The defending regular season champions finished the 2001 conference season undefeated. After going 6-0-1 in the 2000 season, the Mustangs managed an 8-0 record last season. They had not lost a regular season conference match since 1999. The Mustangs were 8-0-2 over the last two seasons. Before the loss, the Mustangs had not fallen in 20-straight conference matches.

2002 HAT TRICKS WAC competitors turned in 12 total three-goal hat tricks this season. There was one all of last season (Arlene Devitt, UH). UTEP, and its high-scoring offense had six on the season; two by Holly Cohen and Miranda Cuthbertson and one each from Kelly Parker and Kate Stevens. Tulsa freshman Danielle Fauteux notched three, while Hawaiis Natasha Kai posted two and SMUs Kim Harvey have both have one.

SMU RETURNS TO CENTRAL REGION TOP 10 After starting the season with a No. 6 ranking, SMU returns to the NSCAA Centrall Regiona Top 10. The Mustangs are also tied for 10th in SoccerBuzz Magazines Central Region, while UTEP is receiving votes. Texas A&M and Texas top both polls.

VAN LINDER EARNS 50TH WIN SMU head coach George Van Linder earned his 50th SMU win, in a 4-2 victory of Baylor (9/20). Van Linder posts a .716 winning percentage at SMU (56-20-6). He is currently 90-47-9 overall in his seven-year Divison I career.

RECORD SETTING OVERTIMES SMU put in a bit of extra work this season, going to overtime a season record eight times. SMUs 1-1 tie with North Texas (10/23), was its eighth, extra-period match this season. SMU had a 2-2 draw with San Jose State (10/13). Along with North Texas and the Spartan match, SMU tied with TCU (10/2) in its sixth extra-period match of the season. The Mustangs are currently 2-2-3 in those affairs. SMU tied with Loyola Maryount on Sept. 27, 0-0. Along with the three draws, the Mustangs fell to Vanderbilt and Texas A&M, in double-overtime. The Lady Mustangs defeated Colorado College 3-2 in double OT, as well as knocking off Arizona State in one extra period, 2-1. SMU had five overtimes in a season three times before (1996, 99 and 00).

UTEP RECORD BREAKERS Senior Holly Cohen set UTEPs single-season records for goals (19) and points (45). Fellow senior Kelly Parker also set a single-season mark for a Miner, assisting on 17 goals. Along with her assists, she had 11 goals on the season for 39 points. She is also the new career leader in assists with 27. Miranda Cuthbertson earned 43 points on the season. The three are now the top three single-season points leaders in UTEP history.

WOMENS COLLEGE CUP IN AUSTIN The 2002 edition of the NCAA Womens Soccer Championship will be held at Mike A. Meyers Stadium and Soccer Field on the campus of the University of Texas, December 6 and 8. The field of 64 will begin play hosts sites, November 15.
