ATHLETE OF THE WEEK Yan Chen, a sophomore from Da Lian, Peoples Republic of China, set new school records in the both the 200 and 400 IM at the Texas Invitational. In the 200 IM, she set a school record with a time of 1:59.83, while in the 400 IM, she posted a school-record time of 4:16.44. Chen also posted the second-best Hawai'i mark in the 200 Butterfly with a time of 2:01.04. The award is her second of the season, being named athlete of the week October 21.
OTHERS NOMINATED Mandy Mularz of Rice posted a time of 23.11 in the 50 Free at the Texas Invitational, the best time in the WAC this season. Charlotte Pierce of San Jose State finished fifth in the 200 Fly, sixth in the 100 Fly and 11th in the 50 Free at the Speedo Cup.
TEAM NOTES FRESNO STATE - The Bulldogs are competing in their final meet in 2002 as they will head to San Lius Obispo, Calif, for a dual with Loyola Marymount and Cal Poly, Dec. 14. Former Fresno State water polo coach Tom Milich has been hired as the interim head coach of the Fresno State women's swimming and diving team.
HAWAII - The Wahine traveled to Austin, Texas for the Texas Invitational, where they placed 11th. Hawaii will host its final meet of 2002, where it will take on Oregon State and Central Washington, Dec. 17.
NEVADA - The Wolf Packs next competition is January 4, 2003.
RICE - The Owls stayed instate and traveled to Austin for the Texas Invitational, where they finished seventh. That was the final competition of 2002 for Rice.
SAN JOSE STATE - Tthe Spartans competed at the Speedo Cup, Dec. 5-7 for their final meet until the new year, taking sixth with 397.5 points.
SMU - The No. 6 Mustangs next meet is a dual against No. 3 Georgia, Jan. 18.
WAC CHAMPIONSHIP TO BE HELD IN SAN ANTONIO The 2002 WAC Tournament will in San Antonio, Texas at the Palo Alto College Natatorium, February 26-March 1. SMU won the 2003 crown, landing its sixth title in as many years.
SMU IN THE TOP 25 The SMU Mustangs began the 2002-03 season ranked ninth in the nation, after finish ninth in the 2001-02 NCAA Championships. SMU has moved to sixth in the Nov. 4 poll, then moved up a notch to fifth on Nov. 12. They have moved back to sixth, but face the bulk of their schedule in January, beginning with a dual against No. 3 Georgia in Jan. 18.
FRESNO STATE HIRES INTERIM HEAD COACH Former Fresno State water polo coach Tom Milich has been hired as the interim head coach of the Fresno State women's swimming and diving team. For the past 10 years, Milich has been the head coach of the Clovis Swim Club and the Aquatics Director of Clovis Unified School District. Under his tutelage, five swimmers have gone on to represent the United States in international competition while seven have competed at the NCAA Division I championships.
RIGAMONTI BREAKS U.S. OPEN RECORD SMU sophomore swimmer Flavia Rigamonti capped off a successful night for the No. 5 SMU women's swimming & diving team Friday night at the 2002 FINA World Cup in Long Island, N.Y. by setting a new U.S. Open record in the 800 short course meter free event with a time of 8:17.20. Rigamonti's time broke the old mark of 8:17.32 set over 20 years ago on January 8, 1982. Rigamonti's U.S. Open record was one of six U.S. Open records that fell Friday night, including three American records and one world record.
