DENVER SMUs Andrea Cossey has been named the Western Athletic Conference womens basketball Player of the Week for the week of Dec. 16-22. This is the first career WAC Player of the Week honor for the junior. The honor is the first for the Mustangs since Kenni Patton earned the award in March of 2001.
Cossey a 5-11 guard from Prescott, Ark., hit the game-winning three-point field goal against No. 15 Oklahoma with seven seconds remaining in the game on Dec. 21 to give the Mustangs the 71-68 road victory. The junior became SMU's all-time career three-point field goal shooter. She is also the Mustang's all-time career three-point field goal attempt shooter. She leads SMU in scoring with 13.8 points per game; has connected on 19 of SMU's 35 three-pointers.
For the week, Cossey led the Mustangs to a 2-1 record with wins against the Sooners and North Texas and a loss to Southern California. She was 13-of-39 from the field and 8-of-26 from three-point range with eight rebounds, 12 assists and five steals.
