DENVER San Jose States Bobby Powers, a junior from Watsonville, Calif., captured his first major collegiate tournament win at the 49er Collegiate Classic in Calimesa, Calif. It was his first tournament in which he had two sub-70 scores and all three rounds of par or better, firing a 68-72-69 (209). For the fall season, Powers finished ranked in the top 175 in both the GolfWeek and Golf Stat polls, owning a 72.08 strokes per round average.
OTHERS NOMINATED Scott Phillips of Rice finished tied for 12th among a field of 90 golfers at The Prestige at PGA West. Phillips opened the event with back-to-back rounds of 71 before finishing with a one-over 217 for the tournament. It was his first top 15 finish since a fourth-place effort in 2001.
David Inglis of Tulsa, who is currently ranked 75th by GolfWeek, placed 25th in a field of 60 golfers at the LandFall Tradition, shooting a nine-over 225. At the inaugural Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship, he suffered a loss in his first match, then halved with 14th ranked Troy Matterson of Georgia Tech in a 4-1 Tulsa win. He also helped the Hurricane to a 4-1 win over Colorado and 3-2 win over Purdue.
