DENVER Fresno State forward Jonathan Woods has been named the Western Athletic Conference mens basketball player of the week for December 23-29.
Woods, a junior from Harvey, Ill. (South Plains College), averaged 23.0 points and eight rebounds in a split of two games last week. At Washington State, he scored a team-high 18 points and grabbed seven rebounds in a 69-66 loss. He followed that up with a career-high 28 points and nine rebounds in a 91-53 victory over Sacramento State. For the week, he shot .647 (22-34) from the field and also added three assists, three blocks and two steals.
It was Woods first ever WAC player of the week award and first for a Fresno State player this season.
The other nominations were sophomore forward Jason Ellis, Boise State; junior guard Todd Okeson, Nevada; senior guard Omar-Seli Mance, Rice; freshman guard Bryan Hopkins, SMU; and junior guard Jason Parker, Tulsa.
