GOLFER OF THE MONTH Bobby Powers, a junior from Watsonville, Calif., captured his first major collegiate tournament win at the 49er Collegiate Classic in Calimesa, Calif. It was his first tournament in which he had two sub-70 scores and all three rounds of par or better, firing a 68-72-69 (209). For the fall season, Powers finished ranked in the top 175 in both the GolfWeek and Golf Stat polls, owning a 72.08 strokes per round average.

OTHERS NOMINATED Scott Phillips of Rice finished tied for 12th among a field of 90 golfers at The Prestige at PGA West. Phillips opened the event with back-to-back rounds of 71 before finishing with a one-over 217 for the tournament. It was his first top 15 finish since a fourth-place effort in 2001 .... David Inglis of Tulsa, who is currently ranked 75th by GolfWeek, placed 25th in a field of 60 golfers at the LandFall Tradition, shooting a nine-over 225. At the inaugural Hooters Collegiate Match Play Championship, he suffered a loss in his first match, then halved with 14th ranked Troy Matterson of Georgia Tech in a 4-1 Tulsa win. He also helped the Hurricane to a 4-1 win over Colorado and 3-2 win over Purdue.


FRESNO STATES WATNEY, TOPS IN THE COUNTRY Nick Watney, an senior from Dixon, Calif., captured four individual titles this fall. Watney is ranked first in the nation by both the Golfstat Cup Standings and the GolfWeek/Sagarin Perfomance Index. He currently owns a 69.07 scoring average, best in the WAC. Watney earned top honors at the Topy Cup, Inverness Intercollegiate, Fresno State/Lexus Classic and the Alister Mackenzie Invitational.

SMUS MULDER NAMED GOLF WORLD PLAYER OF THE WEEK Brock Mulder, a senior from Waterloo, Iowa, was named Golf World Player of the Week for his 12-undre par performance at the Baylor Intercollegiate. Mulder fired rounds of 66-67-71 to help his team to a first place finish. He finished the fall with a 73.5 stroke average and two top 10 finishes.

WAC TOURNAMENT TO BE HELD IN HOUSTON The 2002 WAC Tournament will hosted by Rice in Houston, April 28-30. The championship will be held at the BlackHorse Golf Club (www.blackhorsegolfclub.com). Tulsa won the 2002 crown by five strokes over UTEP. Tulsa sophomore David Inglis took home the individual crown by 10 strokes over SMUs Ryan Abbate.
