Louisiana Tech goes to Louisiana State for its annual invitational, Fri., Feb. 15. Nevada and Fresno State head to the Holiday Inn Classic in Reno, Nev., Feb. 16. Tulsa and SMU make one more stop as well before the WAC Indoor Championships, as they head to Norman, Okla., for the Sooner Indoor on Feb. 16. Next up for the rest of the conference is the WAC Indoor Championships to be held in Reno, Nev., Feb. 21-23.

WAC Championships
The 2002 WAC Indoor Track & Field Championships are scheduled for February 21-23 at the Livestock Events Center in Reno, Nev. The pentathlon will be held on Thursday, Feb. 21. On Jan. 22, preliminary heats in the short running events will be followed by the finals of the 5,000 meters and the distance medley relay. The WAC will conduct a 55-meter dash and 55-meter hurdles competition. Finals for field events to take place on Friday are: high jump, long jump, weight throw and mens pole vault. Jan. 23 will continue field competition in the shot put, triple jump and womens pole vault. The remaining finals in all running events, including the 3,000 meters, take place on Saturday as well, with the 4x400 capping off the championships.

Trackwires Dandy Dozen
Eight mens, six womens WAC athletes and two womens relay teams appear in Trackwires Feb. 12 Dandy Dozen (D12) rankings. Trackwire uses 10 equally-rated criteria to rank athletes, including performance at major competitions, coaching, peaking ability, freedom from injuries, mental toughness and competitiveness, progression of marks, and the athletes age and personal bests. The remaining three factors are a demonstrated ability to perform in multiple rounds of competition, ability in other events and marks and placing in head-to-head competition with name competitors. A list of those athletes mentioned in the D12 follows:

Poll Position
In the new Trackwire poll, released on Feb. 12, the Rice women returned to the poll at No. 10 with 19 points after being dropped from last weeks ranking. The Owls competed last weekend at the Armory Collegiate Invite, Southwest Indoor Classic. Much of the same criteria used to determine the Dandy Dozen is applied to the rankings. Florida holds strong at number one, while Arizona moves into second, South Carolina to third. For the men, SMU moved back one spot to 17th, tied with South Carolina, Mississippi State and Georgia. UTEP remained in the poll, although falling back two, earning 10 points to tie with Kansas for 21st. Tennessee, again landed as the front runner, leading the poll with 59 points, five more than last week.

Others Nominated in Mens Track
Vaughn Walwyn of Rice who finished second at the Iowa State Classic in the long jump with a mark of 25-1 , set a new WAC season-high. The distance also gave him a provisional qualifing mark. SMUs Martin Allgeyer who took fourth in the 3,000 meters, qualified for nationals with a time of 8:03.62 at the Iowa State Classic. K.J. West of Boise State took first with a time of 6.39 in the 55m, his best this season, and the only 55m runner in the top six, not from UTEP.

Others Nominated in Womens Track
SMUs Tracy Ball won both the 200 and 400 meter sprints at the Iowa State Invitational this past weeked. She bettered her already WAC season-high time of 23.93 in the 200m, with a 23.83 in Ames, Iowa. She also ran a WAC season-best 53.76 in the 400m, qualifying her for nationals. Jenni Ashcroft of Nevada broke her own school record in the pole vault with a WAC season-high jump of 12-9 1/2 inches. Fresno States Crystal Simmons had three, top three finishes. She placed first in the triple jump with a qualifying mark of 41-9 3/4, second in the long jump and third in the 55m hurdles. Monica Joannes from Tulsa qualified for the NCAA Indoor Champhionships in both the 800-meter run and the 4x400 meters relay. She broke the Golden Hurricane record in the 800m with her time of 2:09.15.

Around the WAC
In addition to the athlete of the week nominees, several other WAC athletes made notable achievements last weekend.
On the womens side... Boise State had to women set new school records in the respective events for the second straight week. Abby Elsberry finished second in the 20-pound weight throw covering a distance of 63-2 3/4 inches, while Sadie Sweet pole vaulted a new school record of 12-2 inches. Although SMU shot putter Irache Quintanal finished fourth, she surpassed the NCAA provisional qualifying mark, throwing a distance of 15.82m (51-11). Stephanie Tietjen set a new Nevada school record, tossing the shot a distance of 48-4 inches (14.73m), giving her a second place finish. Nicole McRae also a set Nevada school record, doing so in the 800m. She crossed the finish line in a time of 2:12.31. Fresno State had a pair of qualifiers this weekend, triple-jumper Crystal Simmons and pole vaulter Lexine Lesser. Lesser placed placed first and qualified jumping an NCAA provisional qualifying height, crossing the bar at 12-5 i/2 inches. Rice senior, Aimee Teteris notched an NCAA provisional qualifying time in the 800M. In being named to the Trackwires Dandy Dozen, UTEPs Yemi Fagbamilia ran a provisional qualifying time of 53.96 in the 400m. Fellow Miner, Corine van Beek improved her season best to another NCAA provisional time of 4:45.98. The Tulsa womens team qualified thier 4x400m relay team with a school-record time of 3:39.76. Shana Robinson of Tulsa bettered her own school record in the 60m dash with a time of 7.45, missing the qualifying mark by .01.
On the mens side... Both Kenny Johnson, who jumped a distance of 48-7 1/2 inches in the triple jump, and Mark Hoxmeier, who threw 60-3 in the shot put, placed first for Boise State. SMUs distance runners Dalibor Balgac and Martin Allgeyer both provisionally qualified for nationals with times of 8:01.96 and 8:03.62, respectivley. Rices Ryan Harlan posted an NCAA provisional qualifying mark with a time of 7.88 in the 60m hurdles in the qualifying rounds. Sophomore Adam David from Rice ran the fastest time in the WAC this season in the 800m, crossing the tape at 1:51.25. Three Fresno State distance runners took top honors last week. Phillip Ogilvie placed first in the mile run with a time of 4:19.42, as well as placing first in the 3,000m with a time of 8:58.27. Roberto Vaca took first in the 5,000m with a time of 16:16.06, and Roosevelt Cook crossed first in the 800m with a time of 1:57.84. UTEPs Bashr Ibrhim was a provisional quailifier last week in the mile, crossing at 4:04.15.
