Rice's Harlan and Nevada's Kelly Win Pentathalon at WAC Indoor Championships
On the the first day of competition, there were two champions crowned at the 2002 WAC Indoor Track and Field Championships. Ryan Harlan, a junior from Rice and Erin Kelly a junior from Nevada both won the Pentathalon.

Harlan defeated six others, to finish with 4,049 points. The Pentathalon is derived of five events, the 55m hurdles, long jump, shot put, high jump and the 1,000m for the and 800m for the women. Josh Alfaro from Fresno State totaled 3,442 for second, while fellow Bulldog Justin Shwartz claimed the bronze at 3,408.

For the woman, Kelly's total was 3,858, 72 points ahead of Keitha Moseley from Rice, who took second. Maranda Brownson of Nevada took third with 3,637.

Events will continue today, beginning at 3:30 (PT) with the mile run. Many of the races this afternoon are preliminary heats, with the finals scheduled for Saturday.
