Tournament Recaps (Men)Cleveland Golf Southwestern IntercollegiateFresno State made their third top-five finish of the season at the Cleveland Golf Southwestern Intercollegiate, held at the North Ranch Country Club in Westlake Village, Calif. The Bulldogs took fourth out of the 16-team field, landing two in the top 20. Twelfth ranked Nick Watney tied for second place with USCs Kevin Sadler with a two-under 211. Freshman Ryan Carter shot a final-round 71 in just his second collegiate golf outing. The par round landed him 17th in the tournament.
Coastal Carolina InvitationalSMU landed their first top-10 finish of the 2002 season, taking second at the Coastal Carolina Invitational. The Mustangs finished behind Washington State, with a three-round 879. Mustang Jerome Theunis became the teams first top-10, when he tied for seventh, shooting a 217. Ryan Abbate just missed the top 10, shooting a 219, which was good for 11th.
Moe OBrien MemorialLouisiana Tech had another top-10 finish, taking seventh at the Moe OBrien Memorial, shooting a two-round 601. For the Bulldogs, Chris Baker tied for 16th with a 148 and Halli Heimisson carded a 150.
Bite Pacific Coast IntercollegiateThe Bite Pacific Coast Intercollegiate played host to three WAC schools, all of whom placed in the top-10. Fresno State led the way, taking second with a three-round 878. The Bulldogs were led by both, Nick Watney and Jonathon Echols who placed eighth, carding 219s. Nevada tied for sixth with UC Irvine, shooting rounds of 297-290-312 (899). The Wolf Pack also had teammates tie; Ian Hagen and Carlos Concha tied at 14th with five-over, 214 performances. San Jose State moved themselves into a tie for eighth with a final-round 296, the second lowest of the day. The Spartans 902, was led by Bryant Reeves, who tied for eighth with a 219. Steve Bendt also landed his first top-20 performance of the season, taking 13th, one stroke back of Reeves.
Sacramento State InvitationalBoise State opened its spring season at the Sacramento State Invite, which was held at the Ranchero Murieta Country Club. The Broncos carded a final-round 313, giving them 10th out of 13. Mike DeBoard led the way, shooting a six-over 222, tying him for 15th. Luke Sestero and Jeff Smith tied for 44th for the Broncos.
Tournament Recaps (Women)Spartan InvitationalTwo WAC members competed at the 21st Spartan Invitational, San Jose State and Hawai`i. The Spartans finished in eighth out of the 16-team field, scoring a 908, just ahead of 33rd ranked South Carolina. Marcela Leon tied for 17th for the Spartans, carding a 223 (+7). Helle Gram finished three strokes back of Leon, tying for 25th. The Rainbow Wahine placed 15th with a 978 three-day total. Hawai`i was led by Kristin Scholl, who shot a 238, tying her for 54th.
Verizon Mo Morial InvitationalUTEP headed east to Bryan, Texas, for the Mo Morial Invite, taking 11th with a two-day 656. Annie Mallory led the way for the Miners, taking 11th, carding 80-77 for a 13-over 157. Fellow Miner Linda Chen tied for 22nd, with a 160.
Sam Houston State InvitationalTwo WAC teams placed in the top 10 at the Sam Houston State Invitational, held at the Waterwood National Resort Golf Club. Nevada took third out of the field of 17 teams, finishing only 11 strokes back of winner, Arkansas-Little Rock. The Wolf Packs 977 was helped by freshman Erin LePlaunt, who tied for eighth with a 240 (+14). Meghan Ingalls tied for 19th for the Pack, carding a 246. After starting the third day in 10th, SMU shot a final-round 338 to move them into sixth, with a three-round 995. Mustangs Kelle King and Julie Crooks tied for 19th place with a 245 total.
