For the sixth year in row, the SMU Mustangs took home the team title at the 2002 Western Athletic Conference Swimming and Diving Championship. The Mustangs earned a total of 828 points at the Palo Alto College Natatorium in San Antonio, Texas, finishing the championship with 14 gold medals. Nevada's second-place 757 points are the closest finisher to SMU in their six-year run. Rice brought home the bronze with 541 points and Fresno State finished fourth with 515. San Jose State took fifth with 381 points, while Hawai`i rounded out the field with 371.
Freshman Flavia Rigomonti stole the show as she broke four records in the 1,650-Yard Freestyle. Her time of 15:45.93 is a new WAC record, meet record, pool record and SMU school record. The time is also the fastest in the NCAA this season by over 20 seconds. Rigamonti, a fourth-place finisher in the 2000 Olympics in the 800 Freestyle, just missed the NCAA record by six seconds, held by Janet Evans of 15:39.14 set in 1990. Taking second in the event was Adi Bichman of Rice with a time of 16:45.95, while Mustang Debbie Forinash placed third, just four seconds behind (16:49.76).
The SMU record breaking performances continued into the 200-Yard Backstroke, when Alenka Kejzar swam a 1:54.28. The time is a new WAC record, meet record, pool record and school record, as well as the second fastest time in the NCAA this season in that event. Coming in second was fellow Mustang Anu Koivisto, who had a time of 1:58.66, while Nevada's Alyssa Chin placed third with a time of 2:01.99.
Rice's Mandy Mularz slowed the Mustang run down, by taking gold in the 100-Yard Freestyle with a time of 49.35. SMU's Lisa Wanberg took second in the event with a time of 49.88, while Ashley Clendenin took third for the Wolf Pack with a time of 51.07.
Lauren Hill of Rice grabbed her second medal of the championship, winning the 200-Yard Breaststroke in a time of 2:14.84. Hill won the silver in the 200-Yard I.M. on Thursday. Taking second in the event was Nevada's Leticia Cunha, touching the mat in a time of 2:16.15, while SMU's Julia Pomeroy landed the bronze with a time of 2:16.44.
In another record-breaking performance for the Mustangs, Georgina Lee broke her own meet record in the 200-Yard Butterfly with a time of 1:54.58, two seconds better than her old mark. The time was also a new school and WAC record. The medal was her fifth of the championship. Teammate McCall Dorr took the silver in a time of 2:00.45, while Elaine Lee from Rice placed third (2:02.82).
In the final diving competition, the platform, a third different woman was given the gold. Tracy Harkins of San Jose State earned the gold medal with a point total of 370.20. Second, for the third time this championship, was Maggie Roberts of Hawai`i with a total of 363.50. Third place went to Nevada's Christine Lachmann who totaled 352.55 points.
SMU ended the competition as they began, taking gold in a relay. In the final event of the weekend, the Mustangs won the 400-Yard Freestyle Relay with a time of 3:20.52. The win was the 14th gold for SMU and the sixth for Georgina Lee, who anchored for the champions. The silver was awarded to Rice, in a hard fought battle, edging Nevada with a time of 3:26.25. Nevada's third-place time was 3:26.94.
At the conclusion of the championship, there were six individual awards given out to this year's outstanding athletes and coaches. Mike Shrader earned the Swimming Coach of the year Award, while Hawai`i's Mike Brown won Diving Coach of the Year honors. The Swimmer of the Year went to Rice junior, Mandy Mularz, while Diver of the year honors went to two different student-athletes. Hawai`i's freshman Maggie Roberts, a three-time silver medallist and Nevada senior, Katie Oiness, the winner in the 1-Meter Diving, both took home the award. Finally,Freshman of the Year honors went to SMU's Flavia Rigamonti.
