Schools HostingFresno State Cal-Nevada ChampionshipsFresno State is hosting the Cal-Nevada Championships, March 29-30. There are a scheduled 32 teams set to compete. Some schools include, WAC members, Nevada and Fresno State, as well as Long Beach State, CS Northridge, San Diego State and Sacramento State. Complete results will located at www.gobulldogs.com.
Louisiana Tech Tech TwilightsLouisiana Tech will be hosting the Tech Twilight beginning March 27.
Rice Rice Bayou ClassicRice is hosting the Rice Bayou Classic, which is scheduled to begin March 29.
Meets and ResultsTSU RelaysRice ran at the Rice Track/Soccer Stadium, but were not the home school, March 22-23, as Houston hosted the event. Owl Ryan Walsh and David Jacobs took second and third, respectively, with heights of 15-0 and 14-6. Katie Waite finished third in the 3,000m with a time of 10:12.22.
Jim Click ShootoutBoise State headed to Tuscon, Ariz., for the Jim Click Shootout, where the Broncos set four new school records and placed first in eight events. As a team the women took third and the men took fourth, in a competition that featured Arizona and Kansas State. Rob Minnitti was the first to set a new school record, as he won the javelin, heaving it 241 feet, which is also an NCAA-automatic-qualifying distance. Stellan Kjellander competed in his first meet as a Broncos and won the hammer throw, tossing it a school-record 189-10. Sadie Sweet won the womens pole vault with a Boise State record of 12-2 1/2, while Robin Wemple set a new record, winning the 3,000m steeplechase in a time of 11:17.39. Three-time NCAA All-American Max Hoxmeier won both the shot put and discuss with tosses of 61-10 1/2 and 189-10, respectively. Both throws are NCAA provisional marks. Sally Vail won the 400m in 57.24 and the Broncos 4x400m relay team won in a WAC-best time of 3:51.02.
Louisiana ClassicsLouisiana Tech grabbed 12 medals at the Louisiana Classics, which were held in Lafayette, La. Melissa Gibbons and teammate Mariela Guante tied for first with throws of 48-2 1/2. Gibbons also won the discus, this time with a throw of 164-4, a toss 31-3 better than second place. The womens 4x400m relay team took first, in a time of 3:52.38. For the men, Stefan Malmquist won the 1,500m, coming in at 4:01.68, while Jeff McGehee grabbed first in the pole vault, clearing 14-9. Roland Moore took second in the 100m in 10.79. Billy Threets ran a WAC-best 53.14 in the 400m hurdles to take second.
North Texas InvitationalSMU won seven events at the Dr. Pepper Invitational, competing at the Hart Patterson Track and Field Complex on the Baylor campus. For the women, Tracy Ball won the 400m in 56.58 and took second in the 200m with a time of 24.04. Marie Normann won the 800m in 2:15.22, while Karin van Rooyen won the 3,000m in 9:44.38. Ruta Rakstyte won the shot put with a toss of 15.51m, while teammate Irache Quintanal grabbed second in the same event. Quintanal won the discus with a throw of 50.57m and Eva Charfeitagova won the hammer throw with a distance of 56.35m. On the mens side, Hannes Hopley won the discus with a toss of 59.59m, while taking second in the shot at 17.05m. Abraham Ekel took second in the 800m, coming in at 1:54.78.
Cal 4-WayNevada took fourth at the Cal Invitational, March 23. The Wolf Pack were only two points behind Stanford, and 17 behind Washington. Cal won the event, with a total of 179 points. Jamilia Carter grabbed the only first-place finish for the Wolf Pack, winning the 100m in a time of 12.02. Janita Jones took second in the 400m, crossing the line in 57.15, and Erin Seward took second in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 11:02.79. In the 100m hurdles, Chanika Corley took second, while teammate Allison Sewell finished third, with times of 14.10 and 14.20, respectively. The 4x100m also took second, in a time of 47.04. Jennie Ashcroft took second in the pole vault with a height of 12-5, and Sarah Coleman placed second with a javelin toss of 125 feet. Hawai`i also saw action in many of distance events. Alethe West captured the 1,500m with a time of 4:32.80, seven seconds better than the second-place finisher.
