DENVER Loyola Marymounts Christy Cerecedes and Fresno States Jamie Southern have been named the Western Athletic Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. This is Cerecedes first honor of the year, while Southern has earned pitcher of the week honors the last four weeks.

Cerecedes, a senior center fielder from Hacienda Heights, Calif., hit 556 in six games for the Lions. She led LMU to a 4-2 record last week. Cerecedes hit three home runs, including a grand slam to lead the Lions over San Diego. She also added a two-run home run against San Diego. In six games, she recorded 10 hits and 10 RBI with 18 runs scored.

Southern, a freshman from Clovis, Calif., (Clovis HS) earned her fourth-straight player of the week honor pitching by throwing a perfect game against UC Riverside. Southern also broke a 20-year old record held by All-American Wende Ward with a 19-strikeout performance against No. 10 Pacific. She pitched all 15 innings of the epic battle also hitting her first collegiate home run to tie the game. The Bulldogs eventually won, 2-1. Southern went 3-0 with 37 strikeouts and one save.

Southern is the first pitcher to earn four consecutive player of the week honors. In 2000, Fresno States Amanda Scott earned eight pitcher of the week honors.
