SECAUCUS, N.J. Louisiana Tech seniors Ayana Walker and Takeisha Lewis were drafted in the 2002 WNBA Draft on April 19. Walker and Lewis join six other former Techsters who played in the WNBA last season.
The Detroit Shock chose Walker fourth in the second round as the 20th overall pick of the draft. The first team all-WAC honoree averaged 13.5 points, leading the Lady Techsters to their first WAC Tournament Championship. Walker was also named to the all-defensive team in the Lady Techsters first season in the WAC. In 2000, former Techster Tamicha Jackson also played for the Shock.
Lewis will join the No. 1 pick UConns Sue Bird on the Seattle Storm. The Lisbon, La., native was drafted third in the third round as the 35th overall pick. She averaged 6.4 points and 4.8 rebounds a game. Lewis was named to the NCAA Tournament East Region All-Tournament team during the 2000-01 season.
The first round was dominated by the national champion Huskies with four of the top six picks coming from UConn. Walker will join the second overall pick Swin Cash of Connecticut on the Storm who ended last season losing 15 of their last 18 games.
