The University of Nevada and the Red Hawk Golf Club will play host to the 2002 Western Athletic Conference Womens Golf Championship, April 22-24. The three-day event will be held on the 7,127 yard, par 72 Red Hawk Golf Club, in Sparks, Nev.

Last years winner, The University of Tulsa is on pace to earn its fourth crown in as many years. A win in Nevada would tie them with New Mexico for the most championships with four. They are led by All-American Stacy Prammanasudh. The Golden Hurricane won the 2001 Championship by 25 strokes over TCU. Tulsa set championship records shooting a 275 in the third round, the lowest in history leading them to a tournament-record 864, three-round total. Tulsa also returns Dani Mallon, Suzie Fisher and Maiko Senda, all of whom shot a record 68 in the final round of the 2001 Championship.

The 2001 runner-up, Marcela Leon returns for San Jose State along with Helle Gram and Rebecka Heinmart. The Spartans are heading to this years championship with momentum, after a strong showing at the Peg Barnard Invitational in Stanford. Host Nevada has had consistent play all season from Meghan Ingalls and Alana Condon, each have led the Wolf Pack in all but one event this spring.

SMU enters the championship looking to top its highest finish of fifth place last season. They are led by the senior duo of Kellie King and Jennifer Gutknecht, and sophomore Missy Ryan. Hawai`i will be riding the clubs of Melanie Matsmura and Rene Krause, as they look to better their sixth-place showing from last season. UTEP is the lone school other than Tulsa that has won an event this season, when the Miners won the Islander Spring Invitational in February. Leslie Hawley, Annie Mallory and Linda Chen have all been the Miners top finisher this season.
