San Jose State Names Wales Head Swimming Coach

Victor Wales, who severed as interim coach this past season, has been named the San Jose State University women's swimming coach as announced by Carolyn Lewis, senior associate athletics director.

The 2001-02 San Jose State women's swimming team finished the season with a 5-3 dual meet record. The team broke six school records and produced one Western Athletic Conference champion as Tracy Harkins won platform diving at the conference meet.

Wales came to San Jose State from Arizona State where he was the head assistant men's and women's swimming coach for the past three seasons. He coached three Olympians, five Olympic Trial qualifiers and four All-Americans while coaching for the Sun Devils. Wales also spent a total of five seasons (1992-96, 1997-98) as the associate head men's and women's swimming coach at UC Santa Barbara. He also coached at the University of Illinois for the 1996-97 season.

Wales, a native of San Francisco, graduated from UC Santa Barbara in 1992 with a bachelor degree in political science. He was a four-year member of the Gaucho men's swimming team from 1988-92. Wales swam at the 1988 and 1992 Olympic Trials.
