The University of Tulsa is hosting the 2002 Western Athletic Conference Womens Tennis Championship, April 26-28, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The WAC will crown a new champion with the departure of last years champion, TCU.

Fresno State heads into the tournament as the nations 25th ranked team, winning 10 of its last 12 matches. The Bulldogs are led by 2001 first team all-WAC member, Kim Niggemeyer and freshman Chloe Carlotti. The double team of Simone Jardim and Niggemeyer are currently ranked 10th in the nation. Last years Big West champions Boise State heads to Tulsa with a 20-3 record, with two of losses coming by a score of 3-4. The Broncos are the only team in the WAC to have seven players with double-digit wins, with only three of them having less than 15 wins. Erin Polowski and Jemima Hayward ran the table winning all 22 doubles matches they competed in. SMU looks to rebound from a second-round loss to Fresno State in last seasons WAC Championship. The Mustangs last three wins came against WAC opponents, defeating Tulsa, Nevada and Rice all by a score of 4-3. Jenny Langer and Lynsie Jones both enter the tournament with 16 wins.

Host Tulsa will be led by Alicia Pillay, whose 18 dual wins are second in the conference behind Polowski of Boise States 19. The Golden Hurricane fell to last years WAC champion, TCU in the semi-finals. Head coach Paige McMurray became Tulsas winningest tennis coach, with a 5-2 win over Texas-Arlington on Feb. 24, giving her 53 career wins. Nevada comes into the championship, winning six of nine, with its last two over WAC foes UTEP and Hawai`i. Tjasa Jezernik is one of three number one position players to have a conference-leading 12 wins. UTEPs 13 wins on the season, are the second most wins in a season for the Miners, but the .684 (13-6) winning percentage is a new school record. The Miners will be led by the doubles team of Elisa Bjrklund and Callie Dand, who set a school record with 21 wins.

Rice finished the season on a high note, winning four of five and defeating cross-town rival Houston for the first time since 1997. The Owls will rely on its complete line-up, beginning with Natalie Briaud who has been hot from the No. 1 position. After a packed month of March, Hawai`i has only competed in three matches in April, all against WAC opponents. The Rainbow Wahine are led by freshman Lauren Fitzgerald, who has a combined 10-10 record from the top two positions. San Jose State are looking to make up some ground after falling to Hawai`i in the play-in match last season. The Spartans will rely on good play from Noelle Lee and Ana Lukner. In its first season in the WAC, Louisiana Tech hopes to make a sudden impact. The Lady Techsters are led by Anabella Duque who went 14-5 in dual matches this spring.
