The University of Tulsa is hosting the 2002 Western Athletic Conference Mens Tennis Championship, April 26-28, at the Michael D. Case Tennis Center in Tulsa, Okla. The WAC will crown a new champion with the departure of last years champion, TCU.
SMU heads into the tournament winning five of its last six matches and are the highest ranked WAC team at No. 30. They are led by the nations 41st ranked player, Krystian Pfeiffer. Pfeiffer is only one of two WAC players to own more than 10 wins from the No. 1 singles position, winning 17 of 26 matches. The Mustangs will also look towards its 11th ranked doubles team of Johan Brunstrom and Eric Cohn. Tulsa looks to earn its first WAC tennis crown after falling in the second round last season to 2001 champ TCU. Tulsas 21st ranked doubles team of Dane McGregor and Shri Sudhakara should get the Hurricane off to a quick start. Rice tied for fifth last season, but looks to be the turn around team of the 2002 season. The Owls started off the season winning nine of 12, only to have slipped in the last half of the season. They will rely on the rackets of William Barker, who has gone 8-3 from the second position, and the Matthias Mathaes/Prakash Venkataraman doubles team.
Fresno State has new look from last season. Other than the loss of three All-Americans, there was the addition of new head coach Brad Dancer, a former Arizona head coach. The Bulldogs will look to sophomore Hector Almada is the only Bulldog with more than eight wins. In its first season in the WAC, Boise State has made strong presence. The Broncos will follow the lead of its 23rd ranked doubles team, Mark Roberts and Marcus Berntson. Hawai`i gave head coach Jim Schwitters his 800th in a 6-1 win over Oklahoma, March 19. The Rainbows are led by Reginaldo Moralejo, who like SMUs Pfeiffer, is the only other WAC player to own more than 10 wins from the No. 1 spot (13-13). Nevada, who finished the season winning four of five, heads to Tulsa looking to upset it rivals. The Wolf Pack are led by Chad Stoloff and Ruldolf Leuschner.
